Box Score 2 Tournament PageTROY, N.Y. – Junior Brittany Grage threw a 5.0-inning perfect game and senior Nina Korn hit a pair of three-run home runs to lead the University of Rochester softball team to a pair of 8-0 victories over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in the Liberty League Championship Round, this morning at Doris Robison Field. With the two wins, the Yellowjackets improve to 26-11 and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Engineers conclude their season with a 24-18 mark.
Needing a win to stay alive in game one, Grage (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) threw five perfect innings, as the Yellowjackets picked up the first two 8-0 mercy-rule wins. She struck out three batters.
Korn (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) provided all the offense that would be needed in the third inning, launching a towering three-run homer to right, which plated classmates Meghan Hennessy (Hamburg, NY/Immaculata Academy) and Tayler Fravel (Sandy Creek, NY/Sandy Creek).
Rochester added five runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run shot to left off the bat of sophomore Lauren Muni (Clarence, NY/Clarence).
In game two, the Yellowjackets got off to a hot start, scoring four first-inning runs. Korn hit another three-run blast, which then followed by an RBI-double from junior catcher Alyssa Murillo (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville).
Korn delivered a two-run double to left in the second to make it 6-0. Freshman Eleni Wechsler (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) then capped the scoring with a two-run homer over the fence in right center.
Sophomores
Danielle Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) and
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) joined freshman
Stephanie Caudle (Gainsville, FL/Gainsville) in the hit column for the Engineers.
Wechsler allowed the three hits and two walks in 5.0 innings to pick up the win. RPI sophomore
Victoria Hepworth (Chester, MA/Holyoke) gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of relief, striking out four.
Ten Eyck and junior
Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) made the All-Tournament Team for Rensselaer, while junior Allyson Staats (Downers Grove, IL/Benet Academy) was the lone Union selection.
Six players from the Yellowjackets were named to the squad, including Hennessy, Fravel, Wechsler, Grage, freshman Shelby Corning (Arvada, CO/Pomona) and Korn, who was the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
