TROY, N.Y. -- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) senior thrower Devan Hayes was named the New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) Indoor Field Athlete of the Week after his performance over the weekend.

Hayes, a native of McMinnville, Ore., won the shot put and was second in the weight throw at Springfield College on Saturday, helping the Engineers to a first place team finish. Hayes recorded a distance of 14.20 meters in the shot. He was second in the weight throw with a throw of 17.81 meters, just ahead of teammate Tyler Yeastedt (17.03 meters), who earned the same award on January 17. Hayes distance in the weight throw ranks eighth among NCAA Division III athletes this season.

In the first meet of the season at Bowdoin, Hayes finished fourth in the shot put. He is the defending Liberty League and NYSCTC champion in the weight throw, having finished first in both events last season at the respective championship meets.

Hayes and the rest of the RPI indoor track and field team will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Ithaca for a 10 a.m. meet.
