Rensselaer plays its second straight best-of-three series, taking on St. Lawrence in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals in Canton, N.Y. The winner advances to the league's semifinals on March 20 in Lake Placid, while the loser's season will be over. RPI, which advanced with a series win over Clarkson last week (2 games to 1) is the ninth seed. The Saints are the second seed and are coming off a bye last weekend. Each game of this set will begin at 7pm.
RENSSELAER VS. ST. LAWRENCE IN 2014-15
The Engineers and Saints played twice during the regular season with each team winning at home. St. Lawrence won 3-1 on February 6 behind 21 saves from freshman Kyle Hayton. Rensselaer was victorious 22 days later, 4-3, thanks to a pair of goals from freshman
Drew Melanson and 34 saves from senior
Scott Diebold. The most recent meeting was the regular season finale for both teams.
ALL-TIME VS. ST. LAWRENCE IN THE POST-SEASON
RPI has played St. Lawrence in four playoff games, going 0-4. The Engineers and Saints have met in the league semifinals three times (3-1 in 1964, 6-5 in 1992, 6-3 in 1999) and once in the championship game (2-0 in 2000). The first two meetings were in Boston, while the other two were played in Lake Placid.
IN THE POST-SEASON
Under the current ECAC Hockey playoff format, which was implemented in 2002-03 and features all 12 teams qualifying, the Engineers are 4-12 in best-of-three series. All four victories have come in the first round. RPI has played in five quarterfinals.
IN THE QUARTERFINALS
The Engineers have played five ECAC Hockey quarterfinals series, including four on the road. RPI is 3-10 in 13 quarterfinal games. It was defeated at Cornell in 2003 (2 games to 0), at Dartmouth in 2004 (2 games to 1), at Cornell in 2009 (2 games to 1), at Union in 2012 (2 games to 0) and at home against Brown in 2013 (2 games to 1).
IN THE FIRST ROUND
Rensselaer advanced to this weekend's games by defeating eighth-seeded Clarkson, 2 games to 1. RPI won the first game, 3-2, behind two goals from junior
Milos Bubela and 36 saves from classmate
Jason Kasdorf. The second game was a 5-0 shutout by the Golden Knights, who got 24 saves from Steve Perry and a pair of tallies from Joe Zarbo. The decisive third game saw the Engineers build a three-goal lead in the first period, including two goals in a 20-second span, and Kasdorf stopped 33 shots in a 3-1 win over the Golden Knights.
