The Engineers face the end of their season should they not win tonight's second game of this best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals series in Canton. Should ninth-seeded Rensselaer win this evening (7pm), it forces a decisive third game on Sunday night at 7pm. The second-seeded Saints advance to the league's semifinals in Lake Placid next weekend with a victory either Saturday or Sunday.
LAST NIGHT
Freshman Kyle Hayton stopped all 27 shots he faced and St. Lawrence got a last-minute goal from senior Chris Martin to top Rensselaer, 1-0, in game one. St. Lawrence netted the game's only goal at 19:08 of the third period when Martin's left point shot deflected off an RPI defenseman and past junior goaltender
Jason Kasdorf. The Engineers pulled Kasdorf for an extra attacker and got the puck deep with 15 seconds left, but were unable to generate a shot on goal. RPI finished 0 for 2 on the power play, while St. Lawrence was 0 for 3. Kasdorf finished with 33 saves.
RENSSELAER VS. ST. LAWRENCE IN THE REGULAR SEASON
The Engineers and Saints played twice with each team winning at home. St. Lawrence won 3-1 on February 6 behind 21 saves from freshman Kyle Hayton. Rensselaer was victorious 22 days later, 4-3, thanks to a pair of goals from freshman
Drew Melanson and 34 saves from senior
Scott Diebold. The most recent meeting was the regular season finale for both teams.
ALL-TIME VS. ST. LAWRENCE IN THE POST-SEASON
RPI has now played St. Lawrence in five playoff games, going 0-5. The Engineers and Saints previously met in the league semifinals three times (3-1 in 1964, 6-5 in 1992, 6-3 in 1999) and once in the championship game (2-0 in 2000). The first two meetings were in Boston, while the other two were played in Lake Placid.
IN THE POST-SEASON
Under the current ECAC Hockey playoff format, which was implemented in 2002-03 and features all 12 teams qualifying, the Engineers are 4-12 in best-of-three series. All four victories have come in the first round. RPI has played in five quarterfinals.
IN THE QUARTERFINALS
The Engineers have played five ECAC Hockey quarterfinals series, including four on the road. RPI is 3-10 in 13 quarterfinal games. It was defeated at Cornell in 2003 (2 games to 0), at Dartmouth in 2004 (2 games to 1), at Cornell in 2009 (2 games to 1), at Union in 2012 (2 games to 0) and at home against Brown in 2013 (2 games to 1).
IN THE FIRST ROUND
Rensselaer advanced to this weekend's games by defeating eighth-seeded Clarkson, 2 games to 1. RPI won the first game, 3-2, behind two goals from junior
Milos Bubela and 36 saves from classmate
Jason Kasdorf. The second game was a 5-0 shutout by the Golden Knights, who got 24 saves from Steve Perry and a pair of tallies from Joe Zarbo. The decisive third game saw the Engineers build a three-goal lead in the first period, including two goals in a 20-second span, and Kasdorf stopped 33 shots in a 3-1 win over the Golden Knights.
