Engineers headed to Chester, N.Y. for non-league doubleheader with Hawks (3pm)

(ALMOST) HOME OPENER: Rensselaer will be the home team when it faces SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday (3pm) in its first games since returning from Myrtle Beach, S.C. ... The doubleheader between the Engineers and Hawks will take place at The Rock Sports Park in Chester, N.Y.

ENGINEERS GO 4-2 ON MYRTLE BEACH TRIP: RPI went 4-2 on its season-opening road trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., which took place last weekend ... The Engineers defeated DII Alderson Broaddus, 7-6 in 9 innings, to open the season, before falling to Ursuline, 4-3 ... Rensselaer then won three games on Sunday, topping Keystone (1-0), Mount Saint Vincent (6-2) and Eureka (5-0) ... The team concluded the trip with a loss to Kentucky Christian on Monday morning (5-1).

EARLY LEADERS: Junior catcher Taylor Ten Eyck is batting a team-best .421 (8 for 19) with a double, three runs and two runs batted in ... Sophomore Courtney McArthur is second at .412 (7 for 17), with two doubles, a run and two RBI ... Junior outfielder Morgan Ten Eyck rounds out the top three hitters, batting .400 (8 for 20) with four doubles, a home run, three runs and a club-high six RBI.

RENSSELAER FROM THE CIRCLE: Senior captain and righthanded pitcher Kristina Weltzin is 2-1 with a 3.82 earned run average in three appearances (all starts) ... She has surrendered 11 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits in 18.1 innings ... Opponents are batting .217 off of her ... Sophomore Stephanie Caudle is 1-1 with a 0.74 ERA in four appearances (2 starts) ... She has given up four runs (2 earned) on nine hits in 19.0 innings.

PACING THE HAWKS: Freshman Julia Perhacs is batting a team-best .593 (16 for 27) with five doubles, 11 runs scored and eight runs batted in ... She is followed by classmate Danielle Bruno at .500 (7 for 14), with 10 runs and three RBI ... Fellow first-year Lauren Cappello rounds out the top three hitters at .471 (8 for 17), with a double, a triple, a home run, six runs and three RBI ... The Hawks have used five pitchers already this season, including junior Katie Rutcofsky (3-1), who has thrown a team-high 16.0 innings in four apperances (3 starts) ... She has a 0.88 earned run average, allowing four runs (2 earned) on 10 hits ... Opponents hit just .169 off of her ... Sophomore Kiersten Carlomagno (2-1) has a 5.25 ERA in four appearances (3 starts), surrendering 12 runs (11 earned) on 24 hits in 14.2 innings. 

NEW PALTZ TO DATE: The Hawks opened their 2015 season with five straight wins in Myrtle Beach, S.C., topping Eureka (9-3), Keystone (12-3), Spalding (6-3, 6-2) and Mount Saint Vincent (3-2) ... Following a losses to Salem (3-2) and Frostburg State (5-1), New Paltz took two from York (NY) by scores of 24-0 and 11-0, before dropping a game to Frostburg State for a second time (8-3).

LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS: The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners on March 16 and Kristina Weltzin was named Pitcher of the Week, while Morgan Ten Eyck was selected to the Honor Roll ... Weltzin went 2-0 with a 2.19 earned run average in two starts last week. She threw two complete games, including one shutout, allowing just 12 hits in 16.0 innings ... Striking out 12 batters and walking six, opponents hit .207 off of her ... Ten Eyck led the Engineers to a 4-1 week, batting a team-high .471 (8 for 17), with four doubles, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in. She compiled an .882 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage.

THE CAPTAINS: Seniors Jena Servidone and Kristina Weltzin join junior Taylor Ten Eyck as captains of the 2015 Engineers ... All three are in their first year in the leadership role.

BY POSITION: The Engineers roster consists of four infielders, six outfielders, four pitchers, a catcher and three players who play multiple positions.

BY CLASS: The team is made up of four seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.

RENSSELAER'S COACHES: The Engineers are led by fifth-year head coach Amber Maisonet ... She is a 2008 graduate of the University at Albany ... Maisonet is assisted by Amanda Ferro, who was a pitcher and 2013 graduate of Siena College.

UPCOMING ACTION: The Engineers are scheduled to host Plattsburgh State on Saturday at Doris Robison Field (1pm) ... RPI then travels to Castleton State on Tuesday (3pm) ... New Paltz's next game is April 1, when it travels to Troy to face Sage for a doubleheader (3:30pm) ... The Hawks are home on April 8 for a twin bill against Western Connecticut State (3pm).
