Softball Hosts Castleton on Tuesday

Engineers welcome Spartans to Doris Robison Field (3pm)

HOME AT LAST: Rensselaer hosts Castleton State in its first doubleheader at Doris Robison Field, Tuesday at 3pm ... The Engineers were the home team last Wednesday, when they swept SUNY New Paltz, 13-5 and 5-1.

ENGINEERS SWEEP HAWKS: Kristina Weltzin and Stephanie Caudle each tossed complete games to lead Rensselaer to a doubleheader sweep of SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, winning 13-5 and 5-1 ... RPI took advantage of five walks and two errors in the first inning to score nine runs on just two hits ... Devan Puhl came through with the first hit of the inning to put the Engineers up 3-0 ... Morgan Kollmeier later singled home two to give the hosts a 7-0 lead ... Jena Servidone capped the rally with an RBI-base hit ... A two-run double by Caudle was followed by a two-run two-bagger from Servidone created a 12-4 cushion in the bottom of the third, after New Paltz plated four in the top half of the inning ... Game two saw Taylor Ten Eyck drive in four runs, while hitting her first home run of the season ... She broke a scoreless tie in the third with two-run shot, before driving in two more with a double in the fourth ... Kollmeier also plated a run with a single in the inning, giving RPI a 5-0 lead after four innings ... New Paltz junior Fallon Spriggs got the visitors on the board with a solo home run to right, in the top of the sixth ... Caudle bounced back in the circle to shut the Hawks down the rest of the way ... She allowed just the one run on two hits over 7.0 innings, striking out a school-record 18 batters.

EARLY LEADERS: Senior centerfielder Kathleen Baker is batting a team-best .421 (8 for 19) with five runs scored and two runs batted in ... Sophomore Courtney McArthur is second at .412 (7 for 17) with two doubles, a run and two RBI ... Junior Morgan Ten Eyck rounds out the top three hitters with a .385 (10 for 26) average, recording four doubles, a home run, four runs and six RBI.

RENSSELAER FROM THE CIRCLE: Senior captain and righthanded pitcher Kristina Weltzin is 3-1 with a 4.20 earned run average in four appearances (all starts) ... She has surrendered 16 runs (14 earned) on 18 hits in 23.1 innings ... Opponents are batting .202 off of her ... Sophomore Stephanie Caudle is 2-1 with a 0.81 ERA in five appearances (3 starts) ... She has given up five runs (3 earned) on 11 hits in 26.0 innings ... Her 41 strikeouts lead the club.

SINGLE-GAME STRIKEOUT RECORD: Sophomore Stephanie Caudle recorded a school record 18 strikeouts in RPI's 5-1 win over SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday ... She topped Michelle Street '09, who had 17 in a game in 2007.

CENTURY MARK: Senior Kristina Weltzin became the first pitcher in school history to appear in 100 games, when she started game one against SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday.

LIBERTY LEAGUE HONORS: The Liberty League handed out its weekly award winners on March 16 and Kristina Weltzin was named Pitcher of the Week, while Morgan Ten Eyck was selected to the Honor Roll ... Weltzin went 2-0 with a 2.19 earned run average in two starts last week. She threw two complete games, including one shutout, allowing just 12 hits in 16.0 innings ... Striking out 12 batters and walking six, opponents hit .207 off of her ... Ten Eyck led the Engineers to a 4-1 week, batting a team-high .471 (8 for 17), with four doubles, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in. She compiled an .882 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage.

THE CAPTAINS: Seniors Jena Servidone and Kristina Weltzin join junior Taylor Ten Eyck as captains of the 2015 Engineers ... All three are in their first year in the leadership role.

BY POSITION: The Engineers roster consists of four infielders, six outfielders, four pitchers, a catcher and three players who play multiple positions.

BY CLASS: The team is made up of four seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.

RENSSELAER'S COACHES: The Engineers are led by fifth-year head coach Amber Maisonet ... She is a 2008 graduate of the University at Albany ... Maisonet is assisted by Amanda Ferro, who was a pitcher and 2013 graduate of Siena College.
