RPI Athletics on FacebookCANTON, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team dropped a number of hard-fought matches in falling to 37th-ranked St. Lawrence University, 9-0, on Saturday morning at Newell Field House. With the win, the Saints improve to 5-1, while the Engineers drop to 2-2.
SLU senior Elkie Vandenbeemt (Hilton Head Island, SC/Heritage Academy) captured victories at both first singles and doubles, pairing up with Morgan McNeal (Beafort, SC/Hilton Head Island) for a tightly contested 8-6 win over the RPI duo of senior captain
Casey Olsen (Glen Ridge, NJ/Glen Ridge) and freshman
Melanie Frank (Durham, CT/Coginchaug Regional).
Saints Freshman Emily Wyman (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) was able to edge out RPI senior captain
Amanda Alexander (Houston, TX/The High School of the Performing and Visual Arts), 6-7 (9), 6-3, 10-6, at fourth flight singles.
Olsen and Frank were also tough outs in their singles matches. Olsen had a first set lead before falling to Vandenbeemt at first singles, 7-6 (4), 6-2, while Frank dropped her rematch with McNeal, 6-4, 7-5, out of the number three spot.
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, when they host 11th-ranked Middlebury in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (2pm). St. Lawrence hosts RIT on Sunday morning (10am).
