Four Make Academic All-District From Track & Field/XC

Andrews, Willy, Artem & Ukleja tabbed by CoSIDA/Capital One

TROY, N.Y. - The 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District Track & Field Teams have been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and four Renssselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized. Jacob Andrews and James Willy have chosen from the men's team, while Christine Artem and Andrea Ukleja were honored from the women's side.

A senior distance runner from New Woodstock, N.Y., Andrews boasts a 3.46 grade point average in Chemical Engineering and was a captain of the cross country team. He qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall, finishing 52nd overall. Taking sixth at Regionals and fourth at the Liberty League Championship, he concluded his career as a two-time All-Liberty League and two-time.All-Region selection. On the track, he made.ECACs in the 3000, 5000 and 10000 meter runs. He took third at the league meet in the 5K and set a school record in the 10K at ECACs.

Andrews helped the 2015 Outdoor Track & Field Team to its seventh straight Liberty League Championship. The Fabius-Pompey High School graduate was a two-time league champion in the 10K and a second place finisher at the NYSCTC Meet. An RPI Medal recipient, he was a member of SAAC, weR: The Spirit of Rensselaer Society, where he was the President and co-founder. He has also been a Student Orientation advisor, an RA and a member of Red & White (Student Alumni Organization).

A junior sprinter out of Clarence, N.Y., Willy holds a 3.90 GPA in Business & Management and was a captain of the track & field team for the second straight year. He is a member of the school record-holding 4x200m relay team and reached career-bests in every event (60m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m, 4x200m) this year, despite being hampered by a hamstring injury.

Willy helped the team to its seventh consecutive Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field title this spring. The former Clarence High School standout is a multiple Liberty League All-Academic selection and been named to the Dean's List every semester. A member of the Epsilon Delta Sigma Management Honor Society and the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society, he has landed an internship with Boeing in Seattle this summer.

A senior distance runner from Middlebury, Vt., Artem was a two-time captain of the cross country team, who compiled a 3.95 GPA in Chemical Engineering. She was a four-time qualifier for the NCAA Regional Meet, while also making the State Indoor Track & Field Meet in both the 5K and 10K events. She also made the ECAC Championships in the 5K (indoor) & 10K (outdoor) in her career.

Artem was a member of SAAC, earning multiple Liberty League All-Academic honors. An Academic All-District selection in 2013 and 2014, the former Middlebury Union High School standout was a part of the Rensselaer Women's Mentor program and earned the Rensselaer Leadership Award. Also a member of Omega Chi Epsilon, she took part in SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) and SMaRT (Soft Matter Research Theory) nanotechnology undergrad research at UMass Amherst.

A junior thrower out of Wayne, N.J., Ukleja was a captain on the track & field team with a 3.93 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. During the outdoor season, she finished second in the Liberty League in the discus, and third in both the shot put and hammer throws. She went on to place eighth at States in all three events, qualifying for the ECAC Championships in the shot put. During the indoor portion of the year, she was second at the league championships in the weight throw and third in the shot put, which included an ECAC qualifying throw in the weight throw.

Ukleja has earned the Founders Award of Excellence and was a Co-leader of RPI Design for America Club. A member of the Pi Tau Sigma National Mechanic Engineering Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi National Engingeering Honor Society, she has worked as a Marketing Materials Designer at Vital Vio, Inc. and had an internship at Mercury Systems, Inc. The Wayne Hills High School graduate has a Co-op this summer and fall at Hasbro.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
