Big Second Half Lifts #RPIFH to 4-1

Engineers defeat Utica, 3-1

Box Score | @RPIAthletics

TROY, N.Y. - Colleen Fowler and Megan Jones both had a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Utica College on Harkness Field. The Engineers improve to 4-1 including 3-0 at home, while the Pioneers drop to 1-3.

All the scoring came in the second half following a rather uneventful first half. It was just 1:24 into the second frame that the Engineers broke the ice with Fowler (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional), a junior, notching her first of the year on a penalty corner. Utica tied the game in the 45th minute when senior Colleen Dowling (Faiport, NY / Fairport) scored following a scramble in front of the cage. Jones (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island) put the Engineers back in front with her fifth goal of the year - and fourth game-winning marker - on a perfectly played penalty corner just 4:36 after the Pioneers knotted the score. Sophomore Jena Nawfel (Waterville, ME / Waterville) gave the home team breathing room when she buried a loose ball off a rebound with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Rensselaer saw freshman Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) improve to 3-1 by stopping four shots, all in the second half. Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA / Kimball Union Academy), a senior, stopped seven shots with five saves coming after halftime.

The Engineers held a 16-10 edge in shots and a 16-5 advantage in penalty corners.

HOW THEY HAPPENED:
Goal No. 1: Rensselaer's Megan Jones injected the ball on a penalty corner to Colleen Fowler, who wound up and buried a shot directly into the cage (36:24)
?Goal No. 2: Off a scramble in front and the goalkeeper down after stopping a Jessica Belt shot, Utica's Colleen Dempsey swept the ball into goal (44:02)
Goal No. 3: RPI's Angela Cascio injected a penalty corner to Fowler, who passed the ball across the circle to a driving Jones. From the back corner of the goal, Jones deflected the ball past a lunging goalkeeper (48:38)
Goal No. 4: Rensselaer's Jones entered the ball and found Hana Murphy, who took a shot that was saved. The rebound came right to Jena Nawfel, who scored her second of the year into the netting (64:43)

BIG STOP:
Rensselaer's Rachel Kaufman made a shot off a direct attempt by Utica's Meghan McCormick off a penalty corner with 16:00 remaining in second half and RPI leading, 2-1

JUST WIDE:
With her team trailing by a goal (2-1), Utica's Brittany Evans had a backhand chance from near the top of the circle with the goalkeeper coming out, but sent a backhanded shot just wide on the left side

POINT PRODUCER GETS ANOTHER GAME-WINNER:
RPI's Megan Jones, who has five goals and 12 points on the season, has at least one point in four of the five games. She has the game-winning goal in all four victories this season

LEADING SCORER:
With her goal today, Utica's Collen Dowling takes over the team lead in points with four (2 goals, 2 assists)
