Field Hockey Falls to Kean

Cougars top Engineers, 2-0

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Shauna LaMaina assisted on both goals to help the Kean University field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), at Harkness Field. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-0, while the Engineers drop to 4-2.

The visitors opened the scoring at 18:27, after a short penalty corner found Katie-Lynne Lussier (Dover, DE/Dover) at the edge of the arc. Her low shot through traffic found its way into the back of the cage. LaMaina set up Lussier for her second of the year.

Kean continued to pressure the RPI goal as the first half went along, but four saves by freshman goaltender Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) kept the deficit at 1-0 after 35 minutes of play.
Rensselaer picked up its play in the second half, out-shooting the Cougars 10-7, but couldn't sneak a shot past senior goalie Katie DiCarlo (Shamong, NJ/Seneca), who finished with 12 saves.

Sophomore Krista LaMaina (Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) doubled the Kean lead at the 64:43 mark, capitalizing on a rebound at the left side of the goal. Shauna LaMaina earned her eighth helper of the year on the play.

Kean finished with a narrow 15-14 edge in shots. RPI led in shots on goal (12-10) and penalty corners (11-9). Kaufman had four stops in the second half for a total of eight on the day.

HOW THEY HAPPENED:
Goal No. 1: Penalty corner from the left was played back across the top of the arc for Lussier, whose low shot beat Kaufman into the left side of the cage.
Goal No. 2: From a penalty corner on the left, shots by Marissa Robinson and Shauan LaMaina were followed by Krista LaMaina, who stuck it home.

UP NEXT:
RPI is back in action tomorrow, when it hosts Keuka at Harkness Field (1pm).
The Cougars visit Castleton tomorrow (12pm).
