Thoroughbreds use late comeback to top Engineers, 3-2

TROY, N.Y. – Miranda Davenport scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to lead the 11th-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday morning at Harkness Field. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 10-3 overall (2-0 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 5-5 (0-3 Liberty League).

Trailing 2-1, Davenport brought the visitors even at 56:28, finishing a penalty corner feed from Meaghan Lynch.

Davenport then scored the eventual game-winning goal at 62:57, beating RPI sophomore goaltender Rachel Kaufman on a breakaway.

Skidmore was able to hold on for the win, limiting the Engineers to just one shot over the final seven minutes.

RPI got the scoring started just 1:39 into the game, when sophomore Mikaela DiBello buried her fifth goal of the season.

Lynch brought Skidmore even at 6:33, with Becca Halter picking up the assist.

The game remained tied at the half, with each team registering nine shots, although the Thoroughbreds had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.

Taylor Clink gave Rensselaer the lead at 53:19, taking a pass from DiBello and rifling home her fourth goal of the season to make it 2-1.

DiBello finished with a goal, an assist and a team-high four shots. Davenport notched a game-best six shots. Kaufman (5-4) had six saves, while Elizabeth Coughlin (10-2) had four stops at the other end of the field.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they visit Keuka (1pm). Skidmore visits St. Lawrence on Wednesday (4pm).
