Championship WebpageITHACA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's swimming & diving team broke two school records on its way to 11 top 10 finishes on the second day of the 2016 UNYSCSA Championships and the Engineers lead the 16-school meet midway through the four-day competition. Rensselaer's men's team, which saw the 200 free relay team twice set a school standard, is in second of the 15 schools participating. The men had eight top 10 finishes in Thursday's final.
Both the marks set by the women came in the 400 medley relay, which the Engineers won. Freshman
Amanda Wang began the event with a school record in the 100 backstroke (57.50), leading the way for the team to set a new standard of 3:54.04. Joining Wang were
Siena Sara,
Shanny Lin and
Danielle Sauve.
Sauve, a sophomore, enjoyed individual success in the 400 individual medley, winning with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:29.49. Also swimming the event in an NCAA provisional time was
Jessica Sauve, Danielle's sister, who finished third in 4:30.55. Sara was ninth in the event, touching the wall in 4:40.77.
The Sauve twins also helped the 200 free relay team to a runner-up finish with Danielle leading off, followed by
Michaela Yamashita, Lin and Jessica, who completed the team's effort (1:37.36).
It was the men's 200 free relay team made up of Stuart Stritzel, Richard Dong, John Alberta and AJ Schick that established two school records, going 1:24.36 in the preliminaries and besting that with a time of 1:24.27 in the finals. They finished second in the event. Stritzel later swam the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay team that posted a third place finish with a time of 3:28.12. Noah Pan, Brian Polo and Mavin Liu where also part of that unit.
The Engineers collected their most points in the women's 100 fly, which saw Lin finish third (57.49), Yamashita fourth (58.31) and Wang fifth (58.67) for a team total of 78 points.
Another individual with a third place finish was Alberta, a freshman, in the 200 free, which he completed in 1:43.14, just one spot in front of teammate Andrew Klobucher, who touched in 1:43.96.
Freshman Dan Hendricks placed fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:10.00) and senior
Maggie Cullather was fifth off the 1-meter diving board with 413.10 points.
Maddie Miller was sixth in the diving event with 412.80 points.
The women's team holds a 34.5 point lead over Ithaca College, the host school, 642.5-608. Stevens Institute of Technology is third (567.5) and Union College is fourth (533). The RPI men are in second place, having compiled 557 points. The Engineers trail only Stevens, which has 765 points, and are directly in front of Hartwick College (488).
The men had 13 advance to the finals, while the women had 19. RPI boasted eight who scored in the women's 400 IM, five in the men's 200 free and three in the men's 400 IM.
