RPI Athletics on TwitterBRONX, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team returned to the court for the first time since October 10 and the Engineers dropped a close match at New York University (NYU), 6-3, in a contest between regionally-ranked teams. RPI, which is listed 20th in the region, falls to 2-3 in dual match play, while the Violets improve to 3-0. NYU is ranked 18th regionally.
Rensselaer fell behind 2-1 after the doubles before freshman
Andrea Valencia pulled the visitors even at 2-2 when her opponent retired. Valencia was leading 3-2 at the time.
NYU won the next two matches in straight sets for a 4-2 lead and the final three sets went to three sets with only
Mailani Neal being able to pull out a victory for the Engineers. She won at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Neal and playing partner
Nisha Rajamohan combined to earn Rensselaer's doubles point, 8-5.
RPI is idle until March 14 when it takes on Franklin & Marshall at noon in Florida.
