PITTSFORD, N.Y. - With three wins in doubles, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team jumped out to a lead it would not relinquish in defeating Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 7-2, in a Liberty League contest.
The freshman tandem of
Mailani Neal and
Nisha Rajamohan swept at No. 2 to get the Engineers off to a 1-0 lead with the top team of
Emily Laurilliard and
Maria Salmon then making it 2-0 with an 8-4 victory.
Pooja Ganesh and
Makenzi Herbst then won at No. 3, 8-4.
In singles, Ganesh completed the first match, at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1, for a 4-1 lead and a win by Rajamohan at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1, clinched the match. Neal then won her match at No. 3 before RIT won at No. 1 and RPI's Herbst won at No. 5, 8-6.
The Engineers are now 5-7 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League. They host St. Lawrence on Sunday at 10am. RIT falls to 4-9 and 1-1.
