ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving teams began their 2017-18 seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and both Engineers squads eclipsed the 200 point mark in defeating the Tigers. Rensselaer's women won 203-97 and the men were victorious 216-84.
Both teams won 14 of 16 events and both had multiple winners. Individually, senior Danielle Sauve won the 1000 freestyle and the 100 free, while twin sister Jessica finished first in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 individual medley. Jessica also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team and Danielle swam the opening leg of the 400 free relay that was first to touch the wall.
Freshman Kaitlyn Joyce was the third leg on the 400 free team that one, giving her her second win of the day after she finished first in the 50 free. Erin Kane, who won the 200 breaststroke, was the anchor on the 400 free relay.Â
Joining Jessica Sauve on the 200 medley relay, the first event of the meet, was Amanda Wang, Caitlyn Gardiner and Shanny Lin. Wang went on to capture the 100 back and Lin won both the 200 and 100 butterfly events. Rensselaer also had a multiple winner from the diving boards as sophomore Jessica Kugelman won from both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
RPI's men had 11 different individual winners, led by
John Alberta, who won both the 50 free and 100 free. Sophomore
Graham Zola won the 200 free, freshman
Aaron Tice captured the 500 free and sophomore
Trevor Maxfield won the 1000 free.Â
In the backstroke, freshman Nicos Prokopiou won the 100 and junior
Noah Pan was the first to touch the wall in the 200. Junior
Charly Blazy won the 100 breaststroke and
Eric Xu won the 200, while
Justin Chang was victorious in the 100 fly.
Mavin Liu earned victory in the 200 individual medley and
Alex Chused won from the 1-meter diving board.
In addition to their individual wins, Alberta, Pan and Chang also helped the 200 medley relay team and the 400 free relay team to first place finishes. They were joined on the former by
Cory Madalena and on the latter by Zola.
Rensselaer is idle until October 28 when both squads host Ithaca College in a dual meet at Robison Pool.
