Men's Hockey Primed for Union Weekend

Engineers head to Schenectady on Friday (7pm), before hosting Dutchmen on Saturday (7pm)

ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD
Rensselaer wraps up its season-long, five-game road trip on Friday, when it opens ECAC Hockey play at area-rival Union College (7pm).

HOME OPENER SATURDAY
The Engineers begin their home schedule on Saturday night against Union at the Houston Field House ... Rensselaer will be wearing one-time use jerseys that will be auctioned off throughout the game as a part of the annual Blackout! tradition.

EIGHT IS GRRREAT
RPI saw seven players register multiple points in defeating RIT, 8-3, on Saturday night in Rochester ... The Engineers scored four goals in the first period, one in the second and three in the third to run away their first victory of the season ... Senior Viktor Liljegren (2 goals, 1 assists), sophomore Jacob Hayhurst and freshman Emil Ohrvall (3 assists) all had three points, while rookie netminder Linden Marshall made 33 saves for the win in his first collegiate start.

NIAGARA WINS AT THE BUZZER
The Purple Eagles received a goal within the final second of overtime to top RPI, 4-3, on Friday night in Lewiston, N.Y. ... Sean King redirected the puck past RPI junior netminder Chase Perry as the overtime period came to end, giving the hosts the win ... The Engineers came back from a three goal deficit in the third period to force the extra session ... Max Reisinger and Jacob Hayhurst brought RPI within 3-2 in the opening five minutes, before Will Reilly tied the game with just 1:45 to play in regulation.

RPI LEADERS
Three players are tied for the team lead with four points through four games ... Freshman Troy York (2 goals, 2 assists), junior Evan Tironese (2 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore Jacob Hayhurst (2 goals, 2 assists) are followed by four players with three points, including senior Viktor Liljegren (2 goals, 1 assist).

ENGINEERS GOALTENDING
Junior netminder Chase Perry has started three games for the Engineers this season, going 0-1-2 with a 1.85 goals against average and a .948 save percentage, which are good for 10th and fifth in the nation, respectively ... Freshman Linden Marshall is 1-0-0 with a 3.00 goals against average and a .917 save percentage after making his debut for the Engineers on Saturday at RIT.

ALL-TIME VS. UNION
RPI owns a 51-37-10 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to February 26, 1904 – a 6-2 victory for the Engineers in Albany ... The 113-year history has been highlighted by a number of streaks, including early RPI winning runs of nine and eight games ... The Dutchmen put together a seven-game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) from 2004 to 2007, before beating the Engineers in 10 straight – the long unbeaten in series history – from 2011 to 2013 ... After ending the dry spell, RPI quickly ran off wins in 6 of 7, before Union swept the three-game season series last year.

SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
After dropping its first five games, Union bounced back with victories over the RPI's same two opponents last weekend, downing RIT (6-1) and Niagara (5-1) on Friday and Saturday, respectively ... Senior Ryan Scarfo (3 goals, 5 assists) has a team-high eight points, while junior Brett Supinski (4 goals, 2 assists) has six ... Four players have four points, including sophomore Anthony Rinaldi (3 goals, 1 assist).

UNION IN NET
Junior Jake Kupsky, a veteran of 19 games entering the season, is 0-5-0 with a 3.27 goals against average and an .891 save percentage ... Freshman Darion Hanson (2-0-0) has a 1.00 goals against average and a .959 save percentage as the starter in Union most recent two games.
FIRST GOALS
Sophomore Max Reisinger and freshman Troy York each picked up their first collegiate goals over the weekend ... Reisinger netted RPI's opening tally at Niagara on Friday, while York potted the eventual game-winner, late in the first period at RIT on Saturday ... York later scored a second.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Troy York took home ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honors after posting four points over the weekend for the Engineers, including his first collegiate goal ... The Plano, Texas native finished with two goals and two assists and a +2 rating, with a team-high five blocked shots ... He netted the eventual game-winning goal in Saturday's 8-3 victory at RIT.

HOT START
After getting scratched in the season-opener at Ohio State, freshman Troy York has begun his RPI career with a three-game point streak, picking up two goals and two assists ... He is the first Engineers freshman to do so since Evan Tironese opened 2015-16 with a goal and three assists in his first three contests.

2016-17 VS. UNION
The Dutchmen took all three meetings last year, sweeping the ECAC Hockey weekend series, 4-1 and 3-2 in overtime ... Union then won the Mayor's Cup game at the Times Union Center, 3-2 in overtime ... Mike Vecchione was the hero in Schenectady, scoring the OT-winner, while Cole Maier potted the game-ending marker in Albany.

IN ECAC HOCKEY PLAY
Union owns a 24-22-6 lead in the series during conference play ... The Dutchmen won six straight ECAC Hockey contests over RPI from November of 2011 through November of 2013.

RECENTLY AT MESSA
The Dutchmen are 3-2-0 in the last five meetings in Schenectady, including last year's 3-2 overtime victory ... RPI took the previous two, however, winning 5-1 and 2-1 in 2015 and 2014, respectively.

AT THE HFH
Union also a slight edge in the last five games played in Troy, going, 3-2-0 ... The Engineers had won two straight (6-1 and 3-2), before the Dutchmen brought home a 4-1 victory last year.

GOALS? YOU BET!
Both teams have a scored at least one goal in the last 28 meetings between RPI and Union and 23 of those games have seen at least five total tallies ... Union's Corey Milan was the last goaltender to register a shutout in the series, stopping all 31 shots he faced in a 3-0 victory on February 6, 2009 ... RPI's last shutout in the series belongs to RPI Athletics Hall of Famer Joel Laing, who made 31 saves in a 5-0 win at the Houston Field House on January 15, 2000.

SCORING OUTBURST
RPI's eight goals at RIT on Saturday are its most since scoring 10 against the Tigers (10-7) on December 10, 2005, at the Houston Field House ... Kevin Croxton produced five points on that night, including a hat trick, with two assists ... Jonathan Ornelas (1 goal, 4 assists) and Oren Eizenman (1 goal, 4 assists) each had five points, while Mathias Lange made four saves in relief of Jordan Alford to earn the win between the pipes.

GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Junior goalie Chase Perry earned ECAC Hockey's Goaltender of the Week award after posting 83 saves on October 13 and 14, including a career-high 56 on Friday night in a 1-1 tie with Ohio State ... It is the first weekly conference award for Perry, whose previous career-best for saves in a single game was 41 ... He backed up his big night on Friday with stopping 27 shots, including all 15 he faced in the third period, to help the Engineers to another 1-1 draw with the Buckeyes.

FIRST POINTS
Sophomore Todd Burgess, who missed all of 2016-17 due to injury, wasted little time in picking up his first point in the Cherry & White, when he assisted on RPI's lone tally on October 13 at Ohio State ... Not to be outdone, freshman Troy York earned the helper on Rensselaer's only goal on October 14, in his collegiate debut ... Classmate Billy Jerry had a helper in each game over the weekend, including his first collegiate point at Niagara ... Fellow freshman Jon Richards joined in with his first RPI point, an assist, on the same goal against the Purple Eagles.

FAMILIAR RESULT
Rensselaer and Ohio State have now tied five of their seven meetings all-time, including three consecutive 5-5 deadlocks to open the series.

DOUBLE WINDSOR
Rensselaer opened its season with back-to-back ties for the first time in school history ... The 2010-11 team lost at Colorado College (2-1), before tying the Tigers (2-2) and Northeastern (2-2) in back-to-back contests.

DRAFTED
Rensselaer has four student-athletes on the roster who have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft ... Senior defenseman Mike Prapavessis was selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round, 105th overall, of the 2014 draft ... Junior goaltender Chase Perry was chosen in the fifth round (136th overall) of the 2014 draft by the Detroit Red Wings ... Sophomore Todd Burgess was selected in 2016 draft in the fourth round (103rd overall), while classmate Will Reilly was a seventh round selection (217 overall) in this year's draft.
