MEET TIME (OCTOBER 28, 2017): The Engineers kick off the home portion of their 2017-18 schedule with a meet against Ithaca in Troy.

IN THE OPENERS: RPI began the season at RIT two weeks ago and both Engineers squads eclipsed the 200 point mark in defeating the Tigers ... Rensselaer's women won 203-97 and the men were victorious 216-84 ... Both teams won 14 of 16 events and both had multiple winners ... Senior Danielle Sauve won the 1000 freestyle and the 100 free, while twin sister Jessica finished first in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 individual medley ... Jessica also swam on the victorious 200 medley relay team and Danielle swam the opening leg of the 400 free relay that was first to touch the wall ... RPI's men had 11 different individual winners, led by John Alberta, who won both the 50 free and 100 free ... He also helped the 200 medley relay team and the 400 free relay team to first place finishes.

2016-17 REVISITED: Rensselaer's men went 8-0 in dual meet competition last season, along with winning the Liberty League Championship Meet and finishing second in the New York State Championship Meet ... The Engineers also won their own meet, the RPI Kumpf Invitational in what was one of the best seasons in school history ... The women are coming off a year in which the team went 7-1 in dual meets, finished second in the league championship meet and were the New York State Championship Meet runner-up.

WELCOME BACK: RPI's men's team returns 20 student-athletes from a season ago, including nine sophomores, nine juniors and two seniors ... The women have seven seniors, five juniors and three sophomores among their 15 who are back this year.

WELCOME: Rensselaer's women have nine freshmen, while the men have eight newcomers.

FIREPOWER: RPI's women's team returns nine of its top 10 point producers, including the top three, from last season, led by senior Jessica Sauve (413 points), Danielle Sauve (406) and Shanny Lin (386) ... The men have four of their top five back with Trevor Maxfield (275) heading the field ... Richard Dong had a team-high 358 last year.

CAPTAINS CHOSEN: Rensselaer's women's team will be captained by seniors Erin Kane, Danielle Sauve and Michaela Yamashita, each of whom are in their first seasons in that role ... The men have two captains in Spencer Marquardt and Noah Pan ... Marquardt is a senior and Pan is a junior ... This is the first year as captains for both. 

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: As part of the athletic department's annual Welcome Back Ice Cream Social in late August, the 2016-17 year-end student-athlete awards - Freshman of the Year, Athlete of the Year and Richard S. Lyons Career Athlete - were announced and Shanny Lin collected one of the most prestigious student-athlete awards the department hands out with the Female Athlete of the Year award for the second straight year ... She earned her third National All-America in the 200 butterfly as a junior, giving her three certificates after a pair of fourth place finishes her first two years ... She also earned Liberty League All-Academic, New York State All-Academic, CSCAA Scholar All-America, CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and CoSIDA National Academic All-America Women's At-Large First Team.

SMART TEAMS: The CSCAA recognized the Rensselaer men's and women's teams as a 2016-17 Division III Scholar All-America Team for their academic achievements ... The women boasted a team cumulative grade point average of 3.654 for the Spring 2017 semester, while the men had a 3.138 ... The women's mark was first among Rensselaer's 23 teams. 

BRIGHT STUDENTS: The Engineers women's team saw 18 of 19 student-athletes earn a 3.0 or better with 14 reaching 3.5 last semester ... Six had perfect marks of 4.0 ... For the men, 20 of 28 student-athletes had at least a 3.0 with 10 earning 3.5 ... Two had 4.0s.
