LATHAM, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team began the spring portion of its 2016-17 season and the Engineers dropped a Liberty League match to No. 27 Skidmore College, 9-0, at Tri-City Fitness on Sunday. The Engineers, who had been idle since mid-October, fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Thoroughbreds, who also returned to action since October, improve to 3-1 and 3-0.
Skidmore won all three doubles matches with the third pairing being the closest but Danielle Giannetti (Oyster Bay, NY / Oyster Bay) and Jessica Ampel (Evanston, IL / Evanston Township) held off
Nisha Rajamohan (Waterford, CT / IMG Academy) andÂ
Mailani Neal (Kailua-Kona, HI / Kamehameha), 8-6.
Neal, a sophomore, had the closest single match for RPI, but she eventually lost 6-2, 6-2 to Brianna Greene (Westborough, MA / Westborough) at No. 5.Â
RPI, which is ranked 19th in the Northeast Region, returns to the court on Sunday when it hosts the University of Rochester at Tri-City (11am). Skidmore, which is No. 8 regionally, is also back in action on Sunday when it hosts William Smith College (1pm).
