TROY, N.Y. - Junior
Mikaela DiBello notched two goals and two assists and classmate
Taylor Clink scored twice with one assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Utica College in a non-league game at Harkness Field. RPI improves to 1-4, while the Pioneers drop to 4-1.
DiBello's (Mahopac, NY / Mahopac) first goal of the game - and the season - came off a penalty corner at the 15:27 mark. Senior
Megan Jones (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island) injected the ball from the left side, sending it to Clink (Binghamton, NY / Whitney Point). Clink gained the circle and passed the ball to her left to
Charisse Stakutis (Concord, MA / Concord-Carlisle), who got a shot on goal. DiBello collected the rebound and lifted it over the goalie and into the cage.
Freshman
Olivia Jackson (Avon, CT / Avon) doubled the lead three minutes later when she got behind the goalkeeper and deflected a DiBello pass to finish a rush down the field. The goal was the first of Jackson's career.
Freshman Sabrina Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY / Greenwich) cut the Pioneers' deficit in half when she picked up a loose ball inside the circle and scored her second of the season. That goal came at 29:42, but it was less than two minutes later that DiBello answered, this time on a run down the right side that she finished on her own.
RPI held an 11-3 edge in shots in the first half (8-3 on goal) and a 4-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Jones made it 4-1 for the Engineers in the second half when she picked up a loose ball deep in the offensive zone, turned with the ball and shot it past goalkeeper Samantha Whitehouse (Greenwich, NY / Greenwich), who came out to challenge the attempt. A penalty corner finish from Clink - with assists to DiBello and
Jena Dolinar (Owings, MD / Northern) - put Rensselaer ahead by four goals at the 50:55 mark.
Utica's Rylee Meelan (Clinton, NY / Clinton) got a goal back at 56:37 when she finished a penalty corner with assists to Melissa Koch (Syracuse, NY / East Syracuse Minoa) and Sabrina Whitehouse. Clink scored on a penalty stroke goal with under five minutes to play for the final margin.
Rachel Kaufman (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) made eight saves in the win for the Engineers, who outshot the Pioneers, 23-13. Whitehouse finished with 10 stops for Utica, which had a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
