LATHAM, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-1 lead and the Engineers fought off SUNY Geneseo, 5-4, in a non-league match at Tri City Fitness on Saturday. RPI improves to 2-1, while the Blue Knights fall to 3-2.
Leading 2-1 after doubles, the Engineers made it 3-1 with a singles win at No. 6 by
Makenzi Herbst, but Geneseo won the next two matches to knot the score at 3-3. Rachel Ollis won at No. 4 and Anika Pornpitaksuk captured No. 3.Â
Rensselaer took the lead back when junior
Mailani Neal won in a tiebreak at No. 1 and the Engineers clinched the victory when No. 2
Tess Lubin closed out her match in straight sets.
RPI competes at Bard College in a Liberty League contest next Saturday (4pm). Geneseo hosts SUNY Cortland on Thursday at 3:30pm.
