TROY, NY - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) men's swimming and diving upended rival Union College 163-77 Friday night.
In conjunction with senior night,
Reilly Keating-Wood and
Spencer Marquardt were recognized for their contributions to the Rensselaer swimming and diving program.
Junior
Alex Chused paced the Engineer divers with his first NCAA regional cut score of 280.25 in the 1 mtr dive. Meanwhile, Union's Sam Hoyt swept both the 1 mtr and 3 mtr dives with new pool records of 348.45 and 370.25, respectively. The senior broke RPI's Matt Culen's pool records from 2009.
The Rensselaer swim team saw multiple top three sweeps in individual events. Freshman
Mark Mulder (1:47.81), freshman
Graham Zola (1:48.39) and Marquardt (1:50.51) took the 200 freestyle, while freshman
Timothy Ho, junior
John Alberta and junior
Charly Blazy finished in the top three in the 50 freestyle with times of 21.96, 22.30 and 22.55 respectively.
In the 100 freestyle, Alberta, Ho and Zola swept 1-2-3 with times of 47.99, 49.01 and 49.25 respectively. Alberta's first place time was a season-high, .1.03 seconds off his career best. Rounding out the freestyle sweeps were sophomore
Trevor Maxfield (4:50.53), Mulder (4:54.30) and freshman
Aaron Tice (5:06.26) in the 500 free.
Sophomores
Eric Liu (2:12.14),
Cory Madalena (2:15.82) and
Eric Xu (2:19.42) were the top three swimmers in the 200 breaststroke.
Coming up with a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke were freshman
Nicos Prokopiou (2:00.35) and junior
Noah Pan (2:00.87).
Maxfield rounded out the individual event winners with a 10:02.94 win in the 1000 freestyle.
RPI took the top two spots in both relay events. In the 400 medley relay, the first overall event of the meet, the team of Pan, Zo, Madalena and junior
Mavin Liu finished first with a time of 3:39.27 while Marquardt, Prokopiou,
Eric Liu and junior
Alexander Sullivan came in second at 3:41.44
In the exciting 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the night, the team of Pan, Mulder, Zola and Alberta won with a time of 3:14.71 while Marquardt, Maxfield, Blazy and Sullivan edged Union's top team by 1.63 seconds with a time of 3:19.71.
RPI is back in the pool tomorrow afternoon for the Kumpf Invitational at Robison Pool. Events are set to start at noon.
