Engineers hit the road for ECAC Hockey weekend

FIRST LEAGUE ROAD TRIP 
Rensselaer is on the road this weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests, beginning on Friday at Quinnipiac (7pm) ... The Engineers then visit Princeton on Saturday night (7pm).

RPI TOPS ST. LAWRENCE
Jacob Hayhurst had a goal and an assist to lead the Engineers to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday night at the Houston Field House ... The two teams traded goals in the opening frame, with Ottoville Leppanen and Jake Marrello scoring for the hosts ... After a scoreless second, Hayhurst lit the lamp with a power play tally at 13:11 of the third, with assists going to Jake Johnson and Kyle Hallbauer ... Linden Marshall made 23 saves in goal.

CLARKSON DOWNS ENGINEERS
Junior Nico Sturm scored a pair of goals to lead Clarkson to a 6-0 victory over RPI on Friday night ... Classmate Greg Moro had three assists and Jake Kielly turned in a 34-save night, as the Engineers wound up outshooting the visitors 34-26 ... Freshman Josh Dunne had a goal an assist for the Golden Knights.

Junior Jacob Hayhurst (1 goal, 10 assists) has a team-best 11 points. Six players have three points, including classmate Patrick Polino (2 goals, 1 assist), sophomore Donovan Ott (2 goals, 1 assist) and freshman Ottoville Leppanen (2 goals, 1 assist).

BETWEEN THE PIPES
Sophomore Linden Marshall (3-4-0) has a 3.47 goals against average and a .893 save percentage as the starter in each of RPI's first seven games ... Freshman Owen Savory made his collegiate debut in the season opener at UMass, stopping 8 of 9 shots in the third period ... He has a 3.03 goals against average and an .889 save percentage.

ALL-TIME VS. QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats lead the series, 15-7-9, dating back to the first ever meeting on October 16, 1999 – a 6-4 RPI victory in Albany ... After going unbeaten of the first five meetings (4-0-1), The Engineers were winless in seven (0-5-2) from 2006 to 2008, which included a playoff series in Troy ... A five-game unbeaten for RPI (2-0-3) was then followed by a 12-game Bobcats streak (9-0-3), which came to an end last November.

LILJEGREN'S HATTY LIFTS SPELL
Viktor Liljegren ended a 14-game winless streak against Quinnipiac on November 10, 2017 at the Houston Field House ... He scored a natural hat trick to erase a 3-1 deficit in RPI's 5-3 comeback win ... Chase Perry made 36 saves for the Engineers in the victory ... Quinnipiac won the return trip to Hamden, 4-1, to earn a season series split.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Quinnipiac (6-1; 1-1 ECAC Hockey) is led offensively by senior Brandon Fortunato (2 goals, 8 assists) with 10 points ... Classmate Chase Priskie (6 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Odeen Tufto (5 goals, 4 assists) have nine points apiece.

ALL-TIME VS. PRINCETON
The Engineers own a 68-36-11 advantage in the all-times series against the Tigers ... The 68 victories is the most RPI has recorded against any team ... Rensselaer is 5-4-1 over the last 10 meetings.

2017-18 VS. THE TIGERS
Princeton swept the season series,winning by scores of 6-2 and 7-2 ... The defending ECAC Hockey Champions received two goals and one assist from Eric Robinson in the victory at the Houston Field House on November 11, before Ryan Kuffner potted a hat trick at Hobey Baker Rink on February 16 ... The Tigers went to Lake Placid as the seventh seed and defeated Clarkson, 2-1, in the title game.

FIRST GOALS
Freshman Jakub Lacka netted his first collegiate goal just 15 minutes into his first game, scoring on the power play in the first period at UMass on October 12 ... He added his second goal the following evening at the Houston Field House ... Freshman Ottoville Leppanen and Ture Linden each potted their first collegiate goals against No. 11 Union on October 26 – a 5-3 victory at the Houston Field House.

FIRST POINTS
Rookie defenseman Kyle Hallbauer earned his first collegiate point – an assist – against the Minutemen on October 12 in Amherst ... Classmates Brady Ferner and Jake Johnson each picked up their first collegiate assists against Union on October 27.

PENALTY KILL IMPROVEMENT
After going 3 for 7 in the season-opener at UMass, the Engineers have killed off 22 of 24 chances shorthanded, including 13 of 14 against the Union Dutchmen on October 26 and 27 ... RPI's 91.7% on the kill since October 13 ranks third nationally.

STREAK SNAPPED
Junior Jacob Hayhurst saw his seven-game, regular season point streak, which dated back to last season, snapped on Friday against Clarkson ... Over that stretch, he had three goals and 10 assists for 13 points, including nine helpers this season.

HELPING HAND
Hayhurst's 10 assists are tied for the national lead and his 1.43 assists per game are the most among skaters with at least four games played ... He has had a hand in 73.3% of RPI's goals this season.

POINT OF REFERENCE
Junior Jacob Hayhurst was the first RPI player to record a point in each of the team's first five games since Matt Neal in the 2012-13 season ... Neal collected three goals and six assists for nine points in five contests. 

VS. RANKED TEAMS
The Engineers are 2-0 against teams ranked in the USCHO.com Top 20, sweeping then-No. 11 Union on October 26 and 27.

MARSHALL AWARDED
Sophomore goaltender Linden Marshall was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week after leading the Engineers to a 2-0 weekend against Union ... He compiled a 2.50 goals against average and a .932 save percentage with 68 total saves in the two games against the Dutchmen.

GOOD START
RPI started 2-0 in ECAC Hockey play for the first time since 2015-16, when it also swept Union to begin the conference schedule ... That team was unbeaten through its first six league games (4-0-2), before finishing 8-7-7 ... The 2014-15 team also began 2-0 and the 2009-10 opened 3-0 ... Prior to 2009, the last time RPI started a season with a pair of wins was 1997-98.
