Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Justin Pearson recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Yale University men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 6-2-2 overall (5-2-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-10-0 (3-4-0 ECAC Hockey).
Pearson scored the game's first goal, just 1:06 into the first period. After forcing a turnover in the offensive zone, Andrew Gaus skated behind the RPI net, before sending a backhand pass into the slot for Pearson, who snapped a one-timer past RPI freshman goaltender
Owen Savory.
Yale made it 2-0 five minutes later, when Phil Kemp tallied from almost the exact same location on the ice. Tyler Welch found Kemp just inside the left circle and he was able to beat Savory with a low hard shot. Pearson earned the secondary assist on the play.
Following a scoreless second period in which the Bulldogs held an 11-5 shot advantage, it was the Engineers who found the back of the net early in the third. Junior
Patrick Polino finished off an aerial pass from the left point by freshman
Kyle Hallbauer for his team-leading fourth goal of the year. Polino batted the puck out of the air and past Yale goaltender Corbin Kaczperski from just outside the crease at 7:44.
The Bulldogs reestablished their two goal lead at 9:36 on Pearson's second of the night and third on the year. Welsh carried the puck up the right wing boards, before driving to the net front. Savory was able to make the initial stop, but the puck caromed off the facemask of Pearson and into the net.
Mitchell Smith then found Evan Smith to give the hosts a 4-1 advantage at 16:05 of the third. Mitchell Smith sent a pass across from the middle of the right circle and Evan Smith was able to gather off his skate and finish past Savory for his second goal of the year.
RPI freshman
Brady Ferner potted the game's final goal - the first of his collegiate career - at 18:13. Junior
Jacob Hayhurst found Ferner near the wall on the right side and his shot found its way through Kaczperski from a difficult angle. Sophomore blueliner
Mat Harris also claimed an assist on the play.
Savory (1-3-0) turned away 31 shots, including 11 in each of the first two periods, while Kaczperski (3-1-2) had 14 at the other end of the ice.
