Box Score KEENE, N.H. – Samuel Binogono scored late in the second half to lead the Keene State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Owls improve to 4-3, while the Engineers drop to 2-4-1.
Binogono slashed his way through the RPI back line in the 87th minute, before tucking home the eventual game-winner, inside the right post.
Rensselaer nearly broke the deadlock in its favor 11 minutes earlier, but junior
Brandon Pirog saw his left-footed penalty kick, which was headed towards the lower left corner of the net, saved by Owls goalkeeper Anthony Pasciuto, keeping the game level.
Junior
Austin Betterly struck first for the Engineers in the 21st minute, when he curled home a shot from outside the penalty box for his first goal of the year. Classmate
Dylan Confair dropped off a ball from the left side to Betterly, who took a touch before hitting a ball that made its way inside the right post and under the crossbar.
The hosts drew even in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick by Wesley McIntosh. A misplayed ball in the left corner of the RPI area forced freshman goalkeeper
Luke Brezak to bring down a Keene State attacker and draw the spot kick. McIntosh buried the attempt from 12 yards for his first goal of the season.
Keene State was issued six yellow cards, including a second yellow to a member of the coaching staff, who was sent off in the second half. RPI was shown a single yellow in the final five minutes of regulation. RPI freshman goalkeeper
Luke Brezak (0-1), who made his first collegiate start, finished with two saves, while Pasciuto (2-1) recorded two over the final 45 minutes to earn the win.
The Owls now hold a 9-7-2 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to September 14, 1997.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they host Bard College in their Liberty League opener at East Campus Stadium (4pm). Keene hosts UMass-Dartmouth next Wednesday (6:30pm).
