TROY, N.Y. – The Hamilton College field hockey team got first half goals from three different student-athletes for a 4-0 lead and the No. 19 Continentals went on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 6-0 in a non-league contest at Harkness Field. Hamilton begins its season with the win, while the Engineers fall to 0-3.
The Continentals were led by junior Michaela Giuttari (Warwick, RI / Loomis Chaffee School), who had three goals, including two in the first half.
Hamilton took an early lead when senior Sarah Stinebaugh (Old Greenwich, CT / Greenwich HS) carried the ball down the right side and fired a pass to the front of the goal, where Giuttari tapped it into the cage 6:55 into the contest. Eight minutes later, sophomore Sarah Pierpont (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire HS) swept in a loose ball following a long carry by Giuttari that forced the goalie,
Rachel Kaufman (Morrisville, NJ / Morrisville), to come out to make a play on the ball.
Giuttari made it 3-0 with 17:22 left in the first half when she tapped in a rebound of a Maddie Beitler (Cumberland, RI / Berkshire School) shot from close range. Beitler then gave the Continentals a four-goal lead with 11:08 left when she collected the ball off a blocked shot and tallied.
The Continentals held a 13-1 advantage in shots with a 5-3 edge in penalty corners at halftime. Kaufman had three saves and
Marissa Florio (Hilton, NY / Hilton) stopped one for the Engineers.
A goal by Giuttari at 39:49 and a Tatiana Bradley (West Newbury, MA / Berwick Academy) re-direct of a Lizzie Clarke (Larchmont, NY / Mamaroneck HS) ball off a penalty corner, made it 6-0 with 28:12 to play in the second half.
Rensselaer's goalies combined to make seven saves with Florio finishing with four stops in 52:22.
Claire Schmittinger (Middletown, DE / The Gunston School) and
Taylor Clink (Binghamton, NY / Binghamton) had one defensive save each. The Continentals' Julie Booth (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich Academy) made one save in 54:46 before being relieved.
Hamilton, which finished with a 23-6 lead in shots and 11-7 edge in corners, is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Bates College for a NESCAC contest (12pm). RPI travels to Endicott College for a 1pm game on Saturday.
