Football Hosts Bengals on Saturday (12pm)

GAMEDAY: The Engineers return to East Campus Stadium for the first time since October 5 as Buffalo State visits for a Liberty League contest.

NEW LEAGUE FOE: This is the first season Buffalo State is an affiliate member of the Liberty League. 

FOURTH ALL-TIME: Rensselaer has played the Bengals three times, all since 2015 ... RPI won the first and third meetings.

SEPTEMBER 22, 2018: In a non-league game in Troy, the Engineers totaled 501 yards of offense, including 343 rushing, in a 44-14 win over Buffalo State ... Running back Nick Cella led the Engineers with 131 yards on only 12 carries, including a 65-yard touchdown ... Joe Scaglione ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and senior J.T. Kelly had 67 yards and a score on 11 attempts ... Jack Hoggard led all players with 13 tackles (2 unassisted), along with two pass breakups, and Luke Watanabe had eight stops (1 solo) ... Joey Gutowski had seven tackles with five unassisted and 2.0 for lost yards (6), as well as an interception with a 36-yard return ... Jordan Evert had two touchdown receptions (6 & 23 yards) for the Bengals.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Following RPI's win over Buffalo State last season, which featured 44 points on 501 yards of offense with 343 coming on the ground - all season-highs - the offensive line was chosen to the D3football.com Team of the Week ... The unit included 11 different offensive linemen who had 22 knockdowns.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2017: Buffalo State scored 24 unanswered points and limited Rensselaer to 89 total yards in the second half to register a 33-21 come-from-behind victory ... After trailing 21-9 after the first half, the Bengals forced a turnover on RPI's opening possession and took control of the game from there ... The Engineers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, taking advantage of a pair of big plays to set up touchdowns ... Ed Trimpert finished 7 of 20 for 151 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions ... Keaton Ackermann caught three passes for 67 yards with a pair of touchdowns ... Bryan Hayes led the defense with 11 tackles ... Kyle Hoppy finished 22 of 34 for 263 yards with a touchdown, and added a team-high 46 rushing yards for Buffalo State ... Bart Mazzara finished with six tackles with a hand in three of the turnovers with an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

NOVEMBER 21, 2015: Austin Amery scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter and Rensselaer scored 17 unanswered points in defeating Buffalo State 20-13 at Arute Field on the campus of Central Connecticut State ... Jeff Avery completed 22 of 37 passes for 252 yards and Nick Schlatz led the running game with 69 yards on 19 carries ... Mark Grimes led all RPI defensive players with 10 tackles, including eight unassisted and 1.0 for a loss (1 yard) ... Anthony Pilla had eight stops with seven solos, 5.0 behind the line of scrimmage (34 yards lost), three sacks, a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry ... Wide receiver Stephen Johnson led the Bengals with two receptions for 68 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown, and a 13-yard rushing TD ... Shaq Frederick led the defense with 15 tackles, including seven unassisted and one for a loss (4 yards), plus a fumble recovery with a 10-yard return.

RPI LAST WEEK: Junior wide receiver Joseph Viscardo matched his own school record with four touchdown catches and sophomore quarterback Tyler Grochot threw five touchdown passes, one shy of the program record, to lead St. Lawrence to a 35-21 win over Rensselaer ... The Saints raced out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and scored early in the fourth quarter to build a 35-0 lead before the Engineers scored the final 21 points ... RPI quarterback George Marinopoulos threw three touchdown passes in the final 11 minutes with Joe Scaglione (16 yards), Peter Lombardi (22 yards) and Marc Meislahn (2 yards) scoring ... Marinopoulos was 29 for 47 for 286 yards with one interception ... Lombardi caught nine passes for 116 yards ... Delano Munoz Whatts led RPI's rushing game with 29 yards on four carries ... John Sadak had eight tackles and Joe Deptula and Antonio Rogliano both had two sacks.

OFF BYE WEEKS: Rensselaer is now 3-4 in games after a bye week under seventh-year head coach Ralph Isernia, including 2-4 on the road.

BUFFALO STATE LAST WEEK: Buffalo State was unable to overcome an early deficit as No. 25 Union spoiled the Bengals' homecoming, 28-14 ... Zak Ciezki had an efficient day for Buffalo State, going 28 for 38 for 284 yards with a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions ... Jordan Evert had a game-high 10 receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown and freshman Joe Stewart had season-bests with eight catches for 97 yards ... Gino Bonagura led Buffalo State with 13 tackles and Devin Delmont finished with 10 stops, including one for a loss.

RPI IN WEEK 6: Hobart led 14-7 at halftime and then scored on it first four possessions of the second half on its way to a 41-27 victory over Rensselaer ... George Marinopoulos completed 18 of 39 passes for 220 yards and a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns in defeat ... Junior wide receiver Vinnie McDonald caught a team-high six passes for a team-high 105 yards and a 12-yard TD ... Sophomore running back Dylan Burnett rushed for a game-high 50 yards and a 2-yard TD on 10 carries ... Defensive end Magnus Wamble led the Engineers with seven tackles, including two for lost yards ... Linebacker Grant Tragni had six tackles.

RPI IN WEEK 5: The Engineers scored 24 points in the second quarter and held Rochester off the scoreboard throughout on its way to a 38-0 victory at East Campus Stadium ... Rensselaer intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles while holding the Yellowjackets to 131 yards of offense through three quarters and 210 in total.

RPI IN WEEK 4: George Marinopoulos threw three touchdown passes and the RPI defense got at least one tackle from 31 different student-athletes as the Engineers shut out Anna Maria College 38-0 in a non-league game at East Campus Stadium ... Rensselaer took control with 28 first quarter points, including a pair of touchdown passes from its junior quarterback.

RPI IN WEEK 3: Senior defensive back Joey Gutowski broke up the potential game-tying two-point conversion with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter and RPI defeated Utica 35-33 in a night game at East Campus Stadium ... Trailing by eight points with 2:57 to play in regulation, the Pioneers gained possession on their own 33-yard line and connected on six completions, the last of which was a 1-yard scoring strike ... Gutowski batted away the two-point try and the Engineers recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

RPI IN WEEK 2: Junior Bryce Wade connected on two field goals, including the game-winner from 26 yards out with 3:52 left in regulation, to lift WPI to a 6-3 win over No. 19 RPI in the Transit Trophy Game ... After Wade put the hosts ahead, RPI drove to the WPI 35 but fumbled after a pass reception and the ball was recovered by WPI ... Wade also made a 25-yarder with 4:24 to go in the first quarter to put WPI up before junior Sanjay Krishnan nailed a 27-yard FG with 17 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game.

RPI IN WEEK 1: Senior Marc Meislahn scored two 1-yard touchdowns and junior George Marinopoulos threw two touchdowns and ran for one as No. 19 Rensselaer defeated Allegheny 52-14 in a non-league game ... Meislahn, a slot receiver, helped RPI to leads of 7-0 and 38-7 ... He finished with seven yards rushing along with 46 receiving yards on three catches ... Of Rensselaer's 502 yards of total offense, 356 came through the air with Marinopoulos connecting for 276 yards and two scores (1 & 19 yards) on 23 of 35 passing ... He had a 1-yard rushing TD. 
KRISHNAN ON WATCH LIST: RPI's Sanjay Krishnan has been selected for the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List, which includes 37 of the nation's top collegiate placekickers based on excellence on the football field and for continued community service during their off-season ... Among those listed are players from FCS (10), Division II (9), Division III (15), NAIA (2) and NJCAA (1) programs.

BUFFALO STATE TO DATE: The Bengals lost its first five games with three coming on the road ... They fell to St. John Fisher (23-6), at Utica (26-15), to Brockport (55-22), at Cortland (59-21) and at nationally-ranked Ithaca (48-14) ... Buffalo State then defeated Rochester 13-7 on a 28-yard run by Martin Bailey and a 51-yard touchdown pass from Zak Ciezki to Jordan Evert before being defeated by nationally-ranked Union 28-14 last week.
