TROY, N.Y. - Mariam Tharwat and
Graham Zola both earned three victories to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) swimming & diving teams to four victories in a tri-meet with The College of Saint Rose and Oneonta on Sunday at Robison Pool. The Engineers women beat the Golden Knights 157.50-123.50 and topped the Red Dragons 199-96, while the men had wins of 173-101 and 194-100.
Tharwat, Ashley German and Jessica Kugelman each won multiple events for the women, while Zola was one of five men who were first more than once.
Matt Abraham and
Tony Min both had two individual event victories, while
Nicos Prokopiou had an individual event win and a triumph in a relay and
Harrison Bass was part of two winning relay teams.
A junior, Tharwat captured the 50 free and 100 free and later swam the anchor on the victorious 200 free relay. She was joined on the relay by Gwyneth Yuen, Alyssa Cahill and German, who swam second to help the squad to a time of 1:43.50. She had previously won the 500 free in a tight finish, 5:32.62-5:32.94.
Kugelman won off both diving boards, taking the 1-meter with a score of 249.80 and the 3-meter with 300.85, nearly eclipsing the school record. She won the 3-meter event by approximately 99 points over the runner-up's 201.75.
Abraham won both diving events on the men's side, earning 239.80 points from 3-meters and 255.00 from 1-meter.
Min won the 200 fly in 1:54.92, which was nearly four seconds ahead of the second place finisher (1:58.34), and the 200 back. Zola captured the 50 free after helping the 200 medley relay team begin the day with a win and closing the meet with the victorious 200 free relay team.
Bass was on both relays and Prokopiou led things off on the 200 medley relay. He later won the 100 backstroke.
Four others had single wins, including
Connor Lenahan, who won the 500 free in 4:57.06, a margin of 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up (5:12.47). Two women, Ola Nawrocki (1000 free) and Megan Beaulieu (200 free), had single wins for RPI, which is next in action at the MIT Invitational in early December.
