Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior righthander
Jaime Cleasby threw a complete game to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a split of the Florida Trip-opening games on Friday at Battfields Fields. With the split the Engineers are 1-1 on the young season.
Cleasby struck out three batters in 7.0 innings to earn her first victory over the 2019 season against Alma College in the opener. Offensively, RPI struck for one run in the first inning and two in the fifth, before adding a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Junior
Veronica DeStefano had two hits, including a double and a pair of runs scored.
Against Johnson & Wales, the Engineers scored first once again, as junior
Cam Caswell drove in two with a double to the gap in left center in the bottom of the first. Freshman
Jessica Torch and DeStefano came around to score on the play.
After three scoreless frames, the Wildcats scored three times in the fifth on five hits and one RPI error. Pitcher Kristin Frost capped the rally with an RBI-single to left for a 3-2 lead.
An infield hit by Ally Mishol gave Johnson & Wales a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth, before the Engineers pulled one run back in the bottom half, thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior
Maddie Provencher.
Freshman
Erika Holowka (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing three runs (1 earned) on five hits over 4.2 innings. She took a no-hitter into the top of the fourth innings, and finished with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow morning, when they face Milwakee School of Engineering at 11:15am. They conclude the day with an exhibition game against the Czech Republic National Team in the afternoon.
