LATHAM, N.Y. - Skidmore College freshman Noah Williamson clinched a thrilling win for the No. 26 men's tennis team, which picked up a dramatic 5-4 victory over No. 33 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League action at Tri-City Fitness.
Skidmore (9-4, 5-0 Liberty League) won its third straight match of the season, while RPI falls to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
With the match tied at 4-4 after a few grueling hours of action, it came down to No. 4 singles. Williamson won the first set against
Brian Niguidula, but dropped the second to set up a dramatic third set. A 6-6 tie led to a tiebreak, which Niguidula led 4-3, but Williamson managed to battle back, going on a 4-1 run to earn the victory by a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) final score.
Skidmore won the first two doubles matches to begin, as Williamson and JT Wynne defeated
Andrew Imrie and
Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez, 8-6 at No. 1 and Jason Keye and Jack McClaren defeated Niguidula and
Clay Thompson, 8-5. Rensselaer's
Zack Ebenfeld and
Dylan Payne captured No. 2 doubles, 8-7 (5).
In singles, five of the six matches went to third sets with RPI's
Clay Thompson winning at No. 2 (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) and Payne coming back to take No. 6 (4-6, 7-5, 6-4). Freshman
Yudai Teruyama won in straight sets at No. 5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Wynne defeated Castillo-Sanchez, the No. 26 singles player in the nation, in three sets at No. 1, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Travis Leaf also fought to a three-set win, defeating Imrie at No. 3 by a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-0 score.
