Field Hockey Upended by Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman Bailey Selman scored three times and added an assist while fellow freshman Caroline Desautels added three goals  to lead the Nazareth College field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a non-conference game on Saturday on the artificial turf field at Nazareth.

Junior Sydney Luke scored the lone goal for the Engineers in the third quarter off an assist from Charisse Stakutis. Jen Richardson made nine saves for RPI, which had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.

Selman opened the scoring in the first two minutes of the game for Nazareth and Desautels gave the Golden Flyers (3-2) a 2-0 lead later in the first quarter.

The same two players added second quarter goals to push the lead to 4-0 as the first half came to a close.

In the third quarter, RPI (0-6) applied offensive pressure with multiple penalty corners and shots before Luke scored 4:16 into the period to trim the lead to 4-1.
Just before the end of the third quarter, Selman added her third goal of the game to regain the four-goal advantage for the Golden Flyers and Desautels added her third goal late in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Sophomore Amanda Chuttey finished with 10 saves including eight in the third quarter for Nazareth, which outshot RPI by one (17-16).

The Engineers play again on Saturday when they host Stevens in a non-league game at Harkness Field (2pm). The Golden Flyers return to action on Wednesday and will host Geneseo in a 6pm non-conference game at home.
