GENEVA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team boasted six singles victories and a doubles win on the first day of the ITA Northeast Regional Championship being held at the HWS Tennis Center and Bristol Field House. Earning four of the singles wins were freshmen
Rani Jones and
Alex Mednikova, both of whom remain alive and will play in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Jones defeated her first round opponent 6-2, 6-2 and her second by a 6-4, 6-2 margin. She faces Judy Kam of NYU on Sunday. Mednikova plays Dea Koiava of Skidmore on Sunday after winning her first two matches by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-3. Mednikova is the No. 2 seed in the event.
Fellow freshmen
Chloe Barr and
Krisia Flores both won their first round matches, 6-2, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively, before bowing out. Barr lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and Flores fell 6-2, 6-3. That duo also had a victory in doubles, beating opponents from William Smith 8-1 before losing in the second round 8-4.
Senior
Tess Lubin played into a third set in the first round, but lost 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.Â
Action resumes on Sunday and continues into Monday for those who advance.
