SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team began it's 2019-20 schedule at the Union College Invitational on Friday, coming away with seven singles victories and seven doubles victories.
In the A singles, freshman
Alex Mednikova won her first round match 8-1 to advance to the winners bracket. Classmate
Rani Jones lost her first round match 8-4 and will now compete in the consolation bracket.
The B singles saw freshman
Chloe Barr earn an 8-1 win, while sophomore
Sanjana Surapeneni post an 8-4 win.
Rensselaer had a pair of freshmen win their first round matches in the C Flight as
Nitya Subramaniam won 8-3 and
Krisia Flores captured an 8-2 win. They both advance to the winners bracket semifinals with the opportunity to meet in the final.
The D singles also featured two RPI wins as freshman
Natalie Cipriano and senior
Tess Lubin both won 8-2. They compete again in the semifinals but not against each other.
In A Flight doubles, Mednikova and Jones won their first round match 8-2 and then fought back from a 6-2 deficit to win their second round match 8-7 (8). They will meet a tandem from The College of Holy Cross in the final on Saturday at 10am. Sophomores
Brenda Peng and
Sanjana Surapeneni also competed in the A Flight. They won their first round match 8-7 (3) before losing 8-3.
Flores and classmate
Chloe Barr won two matches in the B Doubles, 8-2 and 8-1, to advance to the final. They could meet teammates
Elly Klages and
Jolee McCluskey for the championship if Klages and McCluskey post a second round win after capturing their first round match, 8-6.
The invitational concludes on Saturday with action taking place throughout the day.
