Men's Hockey Primed for Freakout! Weekend

Engineers host Dartmouth on Friday (7pm), before Vermont visits Troy for 43rd Big Red Freakout!

43RD FREAKOUT!
The Engineers open the weekend with Dartmouth College on Friday night (7pm), before welcoming the University of Vermont to the Houston Field House on Saturday for the 43rd Annual Big Red Freakout! (7pm)

FREAKOUT! HISTORY
RPI is 21-16-5 overall in the history over the event, having run off 17 games unbeaten (12-0-5) from 1991 to 2007 ... The inaugural Freakout! was played between RPI and New Hampshire on February 25, 1978, with the Engineers winning, 6-5 in overtime ... RPI has dropped a record five straight coming into Saturday, including a 3-2 defeat to Yale last year ... The last victory came on February 8, 2014, when the Engineers beat Brown, 4-1.

RPI LEADERS
Rensselaer senior captain Will Reilly (7 goals, 9 assists) has a team-high 16 points, while classmates Chase Zieky (6 goals, 9 assists) and Mike Gornall (5 goals, 9 assists) are right behind him with 15 and 14 points, respectively ... Fellow senior Patrick Polino (7 goals, 5 assists) has 12 points and is tied with Reilly for the team's goal-scoring lead ... Classmate Jake Marrello (4 goals, 6 assists) is joined by freshmen Simon Kjellberg (4 goals, 6 assists) and Cory Babichuk (2 goals, 8 assists) with 10 points apiece.

GOALTENDING
Sophomore Owen Savory (6-7-2) has a 2.43 goals against average and a .914 save percentage in 15 starts, while junior Linden Marshall (3-3-0) has a 2.91 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in seven games (6 starts) ... Classmate Alec Calvaruso (1-2-0) has a 2.61 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in four games (3 starts).

ALL-TIME VS. DARTMOUTH
RPI leads the all-time series with Dartmouth, 46-42-6 … The Engineers and Big Green tied the inaugural meeting, 4-4, on January 17, 1908, in Albany.

RECENTLY
Dartmouth is unbeaten over the last nine meetings, posting a 8-0-1 … Rensselaer's last win came on November 8, 2014 – a 2-1 victory in Troy.

AT HOME
The Engineers are 24-18-4 at home against the Big Green.

2018-19 VS. DARTMOUTH
Will Graber recorded a hat trick to lead Dartmouth College to a 5-2 victory over RPI at the Houston Field House.

STREAKS
Dartmouth's longest winning streak over RPI is eight games from 2004-2007 … Rensselaer won seven straight from 1996-1999.

IN OVERTIME
The Engineers have competed against Dartmouth in 15 overtime times, leading those games with a record of 7-2-6.

SHUTOUTS
Rensselaer has shut out Dartmouth a total of three times, most recently on February 2, 2013 – 3-0 at the Houston Field House.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth, which fell out the top USCHO.com top 20 this week, is paced offensively by sophomore Drew O'Connor, who has 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points ... Junior Quin Foreman (7 goals, 10 assists) has 17, while freshman Tanner Palocsik (1 goal, 14 assist) rounds out the top three with 15.

BETWEEN THE PIPES
Senior Adrian Clark is 10-5-4 in 19 starts, compiling a 2.79 goals against average and a .908 save percentage ... Sophomore Justin Ferguson (0-1-0) has a 6.15 goals against average and an .833 save percentage in his one appearance.

ALL-TIME VS. VERMONT
RPI has split the all-time series with Vermont, 32-32-7 … The Catamounts won the inaugural meeting, 6-1, on November 25, 1972, in Canton, New York.

RECENTLY
Vermont has won the last five meetings … RPI's last victory in the series came on January 31, 2004 – a 3-2 overtime win in Burlington.

IN THE BIG RED FREAKOUT! 
The Engineers and Catamounts have met three times in the Big Red Freakout! and all have ended in 2-2 ties (1992, 1994 and 2001).

AT HOME
Rensselaer is 18-8-5 at home against Vermont, but have not beaten the Catamounts at the Houston Field House since November 14, 2003 ... Nathan Marsters made 26 saves in the contest and Nick Economakos had three points (1 goal, 2 assists).

FORMER ECAC HOCKEY FOE
The Engineers went 31-24-7 against Vermont in ECAC Hockey play, before the Catamounts left for Hockey East following the 2004-05 season.

LAST SEASON
Max Kaufman scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Vermont to a 4-2 victory over RPI, in the Catamount Cup finale at Gutterson Fieldhouse, on December 29, 2018.

STREAKS
Vermont's longest winning streak over RPI is six games from 1995-1996 … Rensselaer won eight straight from 1983-1986.

IN OVERTIME
RPI and Vermont have played in 13 overtime games going 2-4-7 in those contests.

SHUTOUTS
Rensselaer has shutout Vermont a total of three times, most recently on January 25, 2002 – a 6-0 whitewashing at the Houston Field House behind the late Nathan Marsters '04, who made 27 saves for one of his 10 career shutouts.

Rensselaer .556 winning percentage against Vermont which is the fifth highest against any current or former ECAC Hockey opponent.

FOR THE CATAMOUNTS
Vermont is paced by freshman Jacques Bouquot, who has three goals and nine assists for 12 points ... Classmate Andrew Lucas (3 goals, 8 assists) is right behind him with 11 points, while junior Ace Cowans (6 goals, 4 assists) rounds out the top three with 10 points.

VERMONT GOALTENDING
Senior Stefanos Lekkas (3-15-4) has a 2.94 goals against average and a .910 save percentage in 22 starts, including three shutouts ... Junior Tyler Harmon (0-1-0) has a 2.86 goals against average and an .897 save percentage in one start ... Lekkas is 20th in NCAA history in total saves with 3,595 through 124 career games.

ALUMNI RECOGNITION
RPI will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1995 ECAC Hockey Championship team on Saturday during the Big Red Freakout! In addition, the team will salute those in attendance from the 1985 National Championship squad, which is celebrating 35 years ... A number of notable members from the two teams will be honored between the first and second periods during Freakout! Including Mike Tamburro '96 and Mike Sadeghpour '85.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?
The Engineers have a 2.19 team goals against average in 15 ECAC Hockey contests this season, which ranks third in the league and 12th nationally.

CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Individually, all three RPI netminders have had solid seasons in ECAC Hockey play ... Owen Savory is 5-5-1 with a 2.23 goals against average and a .920 save percentage, while Alec Calvaruso (1-1-0) has a 2.03 goals against average and a .921 save percentage ... Not to be outdone, Linden Marshall (1-1-0) boasts a 1.83 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

ELITE COMPANY
Only three RPI teams have posted a sub-2.20 team goals against average in ECAC Hockey play over the last 20 years, including 2003-04 (1.98), 2015-16 (2.16) and 2012-13 (2.19) ... The 2019-20 Engineers are at 2.19 with seven conference games to play.

VERY GOOD BOYS
At 7.50 penalty minutes per game, the Engineers are the least penalized team in the nation ... Alaska-Anchorage, the most penalized team, is averaging 15.5 minutes per contest ... Amongst ECAC Hockey foes, Harvard is right behind RPI at 7.89 minutes per game.

TURN IT UP... PAST 11
Senior Patrick Polino's seventh goal of the season gave him 12 points on the year, which set a new career high ... He recorded exactly 11 points in each of his three previous seasons.

TWO SHUTOUTS
Sophomore Owen Savory's back-to-back shutouts of St. Lawrence and Colgate are the first by an RPI netminder since he stopped all 43 shots in last year's Mayor's Cup tie with Union College. 

ALMOST THREE
Savory came just 12.8 seconds from becoming the first RPI hockey goaltender to record three consecutive shutouts, when he surrendered Brown's only goal on January 18. 

EMPTY NET DOUBLE
The Engineers netted empty net goals in back-to-back games on January 3 and 4 for the first time since Freakout! Weekend in 2011 ... RPI beat Brown 3-0 and then-No. 1 Yale, 5-2, on in the Big Red Freakout!

SOPHOMORE FEAT
Owen Savory became just the sixth RPI goaltender to register three shutouts before the end of his second season on the team, joining Nathan Marsters (5), Bill Sack (4), Jason Kasdorf (4), Daren Puppa (3) and John Stopen (3).

SAVORY TIMES TWO
Owen Savory collected his second straight ECAC Hockey/MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week award on January 13 after stopping all 37 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of Colgate on January 11.

BACK-TO-BACK
Savory is the seventh RPI goaltender in program history to notch two straight shutouts, joining Bob Fox (1954 & 1955), Bill Sack (1964), Joel Laing (1999, 2000 twice), Kevin Kirk (2002), Nathan Marsters (2004) and Jason Kasdorf (2013).

SAVORY PICKED BY LEAGUE
ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly award winners and sophomore Owen Savory has been named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week for January 6 ...He posted a 25-save shutout of St. Lawrence University in his only start last week ... On Saturday against the Saints, he recorded six saves in the first period, eight in the second and 11 in the third to pick up his fourth win the season. Stopping a handful of breakaway in the first two periods, he helped the Engineers go 3 for 3 killing penalties on the night.

ECAC HOCKEY RANKINGS
The Engineers are seventh in the league scoring, averaging 2.42 goals per game ... RPI's power play is ninth at 15.5%, while its penalty kill is second (85.2%) ... The Engineers are allowing 29.0 shots per game this season, which is good for fourth in the conference ... They gave up 33.6 shots per contest last year ... RPI is fourth in the league in face-off percentage at 51.9% after ending last season in 11th (47.2%) ... The Engineers are allowing just 2.20 goals per game in ECAC Hockey play, which ranks third ... Their 433 shots are the most in the league.
