UTICA, N.Y. - Freshman
Alex Ryan won the 800 meters and ran on the third place 4x400 relay team and three others earned victories to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's track & field team to a win in the 13-school, multi-divisional Pioneer Open hosted by Utica College. The Engineers had 133 points to easily out-distance second place Utica (97) and third place St. John Fisher (94).
Ryan won the 800 in a time of 2:00.76, which was nearly two seconds ahead of the runner-up's time of 2:02.32. Teammates Matthew Gutierrez and
Raymond Rivituso were third and fourth, respectively. Those two, along with
Ben Ertel, were also part of the 4x4 team that finished in 3:33.58.
Sophomore
AJ Lloyd won the mile with a time of 4:25.58,
Noah Falasco was first in the 3000 meters with a near-facility record time of 8:18.67 and
Frank Triolo captured the 5000 meters in 15:42.28. Triolo led a group of RPI runners that filled out the top five and six of the top seven.
Grey Conover was second and
Will Hawkins finished third.
In the 3000 meters, RPI had the top three finishers, six of the top seven and 12 of the top 14. Following Falasco in the top three were Joey Domanico, who ran an 8:25.88, and
Henry Jaques, who finished in 8:34.79.
Rensselaer returns to Utica next weekend for the Blue & Orange Invitational.
