GENEVA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's tennis team had a strong showing on Day 1 of the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament, hosted by Hobart College. Five singles players made the third round of action, while two doubles teams are still alive in the quarterfinals.
Aiden Drover-Mattinen picked up a pair of victories in singles play, defeating Akul Telluri of The College of New Jersey (6-1, 6-3) and Nicolas Luis from Ithaca (6-3, 6-0).
Abraham Yohannes came away with a wins over Sean Danahy of St. John Fisher (6-1, 6-0) and Brendan Jimenez from Skidmore (7-5, 6-4). Also still in action in singles play is
Yudai Teruyama,
Emilio Van Cotthem and
Igor Visnevskij, who all collected a pair of wins on the day.
In doubles play,
Eddie Wu and Yohannes teamed up to win two matches, topping Matthew Michibata and Justin Wain out of The College of New Jersey (8-3) as well as Arun Guruswamy and Mihajlo Ivanovic from Vassar (8-1). Not to be outdone, Visnevskij and
Suhas Krishnan also advanted to the quarters, collecting victories over Dean Kraft and Minos Stavrakas from Ithaca (8-5) and Harry Lyu and Troy Steiner of Hobart (8-0).
