Box Score TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student Tanner Gates scored 1:16 into overtime to lift the fifth-ranked Colgate University women's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Raiders improve to 12-3-0 overall (4-1-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-9-0 (2-5-0 ECAC Hockey).
Gates (Oceanside, CA / Anaheim Lady Ducks) finished off a give-and-go with junior Katilyn O'Donohoe (Downington, PA / Mid-Fairfield Stars) at the front of the RPI net to give the visitors the bonus point on the night. Junior Danielle Serdachny (Edmonton, AB / Pursuit of Excellence) picked up the secondary helper on the game-winning tally.
RPI opened the scoring 5:51 of the first period, when freshman
Audrey McCutcheon (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, PQ / Stanstead College) stuck home the rebound of a shot by junior
Julia Blitz (Potomac, MD / Washington Pride).
The Raiders equalized at 10:42, taking advantage of a turnover in the offensive zone. Freshman Katie Chan (Richmond, BC / South Delta Secondary) beat RPI junior netminder
Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) blocker-side after receiving a feed from behind the net by senior Eleri Mackay (Brookfield, WI / Chicago Mission).
Sophomore
Ellie Kaiser (Westmont, IL / Chicago Mission) gave the Engineers the lead right back at 14:21 of the frame, lifting a shot over the left shoulder of Colgate freshman goaltender Hannah Murphy (Bradford, ON / Bradford District) for her third goal of the season. Senior
Delaney Weiss (Lake Forest, IL / Chicago Young Americans) took the initial shot from the left point that was stopped by Murphy, but Kaiser was there to clean up the rebound for the goal.
The only goal of the middle stanza was scored by Colgate junior Darcie Lappan (Hartington, ON / Kingston Jr. Ice Wolves) on a tip in front of the net. Assists on the goal that made it 2-2 went to senior Taylor Kirwan (Gull Lake, SK / Lindenwood) and Gates.
Colgate took its first lead of the game at 18:16 of the third, when Eleri Mackay redirected home a point shot by freshman Rachel Golnitz (Wyoming, MN / Forest Lake Area).
RPI then pulled Rampado for an extra skater with just under two minutes to play in regulation, before drawing a penalty for a 6-on-4 opportunity. The Engineers took advantage, as Blitz wired a shot home from the top of the right circle, evening the score at three apiece.
The Raiders outshot RPI 49-16 in the game, including 21-2 in the second period. Murphy (4-0-0) made 13 saves, while Rampado (4-9-0) had a season-high 45 at the other end of the ice.
Rensselaer is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts Cornell (3pm). The Raiders travel to Schenectady to take on Union (3pm).
