TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team has qualified for the Liberty League Tournament as the third seed and will visit second seed Ithaca College on Wednesday (4pm). The single-elimination competition also includes top-seeded Rochester and fourth-seeded Skidmore, who also square off on Wednesday (3:30), with the winners meeting on Saturday.
Led by 11th-year head coach
Amber Maisonet, Rensselaer went 10-4 overall this season, including a 9-3 mark in Liberty League play. Finishing the regular season a on a six-game winning streak, the Engineers are batting .345 as a team and are outscoring the opposition 96-41. In the circle, RPI boasts a 3.06 earned run average and has 74 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. All three members of the pitching staff combined to throw a no-hitter in the team's first game of the season - a 3-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz.
Individually, RPI is paced by sophomore shortstop
Catherine Worthington (Pownal, VT), who is hitting .486 (18 for 37) with five doubles, two triples, two home runs, nine runs and 13 RBIs. She has a .525 on-base percentage and an .892 slugging percentage. Junior centerfielderÂ
Erin Askins (Tehachapi, CA) is second on the team with a .477 batting average (21 for 44), with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs, 17 runs scored and 16 runs batted in. Graduate student
Maddie Provencher (Rutland, MA) rounds out the top three hitters at .395 (17 for 43), with six doubles, 13 runs and nine RBIs.
In the circle, sophomore
Brooke Sroczinski (Raynham, MA) is 5-2 with a 2.42 earned run average in 10 appearances (6 starts). She has allowed 46 hits in 46.1 innings, striking out 40 and walking 13. Classmate Alexi Cooke (Newton, NJ) is 5-2 with a 3.78 earned run average in nine appearances (8 starts). She has given up 39 hits in 37.0 innings, collecting 32 strikeouts and 15 walks.
The Engineers are making their 11th consecutive Liberty League Tournament appearance, having won in 2013 and 2017.Â
