ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team scored twice in a 6-minute span to take a lead, but Hartwick College countered with a pair of goals in a short span of its own and the Hawks held on to defeat the Engineers 3-2 in a non-conference contest at Wright Stadium. The game was the first of 2021 for both schools.
Trailing 1-0 after approximately 41 minutes, RPI junior
Brianna Duba tied the score on a point-blank shot following a penalty corner.
Lauren McCarthy, a freshman, had the assist on the goal, which came at 41:45. Sophomore
Maura Kiernan put the visitors in front at 47:42 when she scored after handling a rebound of a
Lauren Roy shot that had hit the post.
The lead lasted just under four minutes, however, as Hartwick's Sydney Gagnon knotted the score with a scoop shot. The Hawks got what proved to be the game-winner at 58:43 when Holly Calore poked in a loose ball off a scramble in front.
Junior
Jen Richardson had five saves, while Duba notched a defensive save. Madison Maddocks had a single stop on the other end for Hartwick, which held a 15-8 edge in shots and a 7-5 margin in penalty corners.
RPI is back on the road on Saturday for a non-league game at Geneseo (1pm). The Hawks host Rochester on Saturday at 2pm.
