SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team competed in the Union College Invitational, which had four singles flights and two doubles flights, and the Engineers captured five of the six championships in the two-day event that concluded on Sunday.

Juniors Alex Mednikova and Rani Jones both won two flights, capturing the A Flight and B Flight, respectively, and the A Flight doubles as a tandem. Freshman Brooke Bauer won the C Flight singles title and joined Sonya Khudyakov to win the B Flight doubles championship. Junior Krisia Flores Gonzalez advanced to the finals of both the C Flight singles and A Flight doubles.

In the A Flight singles, Mednikova defeated Maddie DeNuccie of Holy Cross in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, (10-6) after winning two rounds of doubles with Jones. The tandem won their semifinals match 8-2 over a team from Holy Cross before facing Flores Gonzalez and her sister, Lorna, in the final, which Mednikova and Jones won 8-5. Krisia and Lorna advanced to the final with an 8-3 win over a team from the host Dutchwomen.

In her B Flight singles final, Jones took down Sophie Brown of Union 6-1, 6-0. It concluded a tournament that also boasted wins of 6-1, 6-0 (first round) and 6-1, 6-2 (semifinals).

The match between Bauer and Krisia Flores Gonzalez was dramatic with the freshman prevailing 5-7, 6-4, (15-13). Bauer had previously won the B Flight doubles with Khudyakov, defeating a team from Oneonta 8-4 and then a duo from Holy Cross 8-2. Rensselaer's tandem of Natalie Cipriano and Jolee McCluskey were also in the semifinals but lost 8-3.

RPI is back in action the weekend of September 18 when it competes in the ITA Regional Tournament at William Smith College.
