Three in Singles; Two in Doubles Alive at ITAs

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team came out of the first day of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships with three student-athletes alive in singles and two doubles teams still in the field. Action continues on Sunday on the campus of William Smith College.

In singles, Alex Mednikova, who is seeded among the Nos. 5-8 players, defeated opponents from New Paltz (6-1, 6-0) and William Smith (6-1, 6-4) and will face Chantel Thongphok in the Round of 16. She will be joined by teammates Rani Jones and Lorna Flores Gonzalez, who also went 2-0 on Saturday.

Jones, who is seeded among the Nos. 9-16 won her matches by scores of 6-1, 6-2 (Union) and 6-1, 6-2 (TCNJ), while Flores Gonzalez was victorious 6-1, 6-1 (TCNJ) and 6-2, 6-3 (Skidmore). Flores Gonzalez, a freshman, faces Anastastia Balyk of NYU, who is seeded among the Nos. 9-16, and Jones will play Hannah Apsey of Hamilton. Apsey is seeded among the Nos. 5-8.

All three from Rensselaer, along with Krisia Flores Gonzalez, are alive in the doubles tournament with both tandems having gone 2-0. Flores Gonzalez and Flores Gonzalez, who are sisters, defeated teams from New Paltz (8-5) and Vassar (8-2) and advance to play another team from Vassar, Melina Stavrapolous & Macy Dowd, who are among those ranked Nos. 5-8.

The No. 3 seed, Jones and Mednikova had wins of 8-0 (St. Lawrence) and New Jersey City University (8-1) and face either Aspey & Lauren Holzman of Hamilton or Katherine Almquist & Ella Provost of Skidmore. The tandem from Hamilton is among those ranked Nos. 5-8.
