SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -
Matt Lecky finished first and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's cross country team was second in the Saratoga Invitational, which Rensselaer hosted at Saratoga Spa State Park. The Engineers had four of the top 10 finishers and compiled 34 points for the runner-up team spot. Vassar was first with 30 points and Ithaca was third with 69 in the seven school field.
Coming off a victory at Vassar's Invitational two weeks ago, Lecky again beat the field, completing the 8K course in 25:32.1 (5:09 pace). The junior was 21 seconds in front of the second place finisher, Miles Takiguchi of the Brewers, who crossed the line in 25:53.3.
Rensselaer's
Owen Szabo was third overall with a time of 25:53.9, which was just .6 behind Takiguchi and one second in front of Ithaca's Danny Jagoe (25:54.9). All three competitors ran at a 5:13 pace.
John Reed was third on the Engineers and seventh overall with a time of 26:03.1 (5:15 pace) and
Cory Kennedy came in 10th overall at 26:12.2. He was three spots ahead of teammate Vince Simonetti (26:16.6), who was 13th with teammates immediately following in 14th through 18th.
RPI races again on Friday at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.
