SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Four student-athletes had two individual victories apiece and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming & diving team captured 14 of 16 events in defeating Union College 203-81 in a dual meet at Alumni Gym Pool. The Engineers improve to 4-2, while the Dutchmen drop to 1-3.
After RPI opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, sophomore
Daniel Savidge earned an 11-second victory in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 10:06.18.
Mike Dowd followed by finishing first in the 200 freestyle - RPI had the top three finishers in that event - in 1:47.08. They were the first of two triumphs for both Dowd and Savidge.
Jimmy Zhen edged out Union's James Javier in the backstroke, 56.00-56.48, and
Alex Aung captured the 200 butterfly (1:59.47). Dowd registered a win in the 50 free (22.39) with three teammates following directly behind and Aung won the 100 free, finishing just in front of Dowd with times of 49.77 and 50.06, respectively.
Savidge captured the 200 backstroke in 1:58.97, nearly four seconds ahead of teammate
Michael Lee (2:02.43), and senior
Matthew Youngbar was first in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.63.
Lorenzo Gurri earned the victory in the 100 butterfly (52.86) and freshman
Jake Fassora was the first to touch the wall in the 200 individual medley.Â
The 400 free relay team, which included Zhen and Aung, finished the swimming portion of the meet with a 15-second win.
Senior
Matt Abraham won off both diving boards, beating Union's Colin Farrell in the 3-meter and 1-meter events.
RPI travels to Skidmore College for a dual meet next Saturday at 1pm.
