Marshall is Finalist for Unsung Hero Award

Graduate student netminder one of six up for national honor

TROY, N.Y. – The Hockey Commissioners Association has announced the finalists for the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Linden Marshall has been selected. He is one of six vying for the honor, with the winner being announced on April 8 at the Frozen Four in Boston.

A graduate student, captain and goaltender from Victoria, B.C., Marshall earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, posting a 3.63 grade point average. He is currently finishing his graduate degree in supply chain management and carries a 3.93 GPA.

Off the ice, Marshall has helped out with the Josephs House and Shelter as well as aided Giveblood, a Canadian blood drive service. An ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year finalist in 2019-20, he has earned the team's Scholar Athlete Award and has been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team in each year he was eligible. Prior to joining the Engineers, he was the Trail Smoke Eaters' Scholastic Player of the Year.

Marshall played in 26 games this season, including 24 as a starter. He posted a 9-13-3 record, with a 2.53 goals against average and an .895 save percentage. Recording one shutout – a 3-0 victory over Union on October 30, 2021. He totaled 535 saves in 1491:15 minutes.

In 13 ECAC Hockey contests, Marshall went 5-7-0 with a 2.89 goals against average and an .870 save percentage. The former Trail Smoke Eaters netminder set career-highs in wins and goals against average this season.

Concluding his RPI career with 77 games played, including 71 as a starter, Marshall went 22-44-5, with a 3.00 goals against average and an .899 save percentage. He made 1,883 save in 4238:23 minutes. He ranks seventh in school history in games played and minutes, while sitting third in losses.

The other finalists for the award are Jake Pivonka from Notre Dame, Wyatt Aamodt from Minnesota State, Ethan Roswell of Bentley, Jordan Seyfert from Merrimack and Mark Senden of North Dakota.

The Engineers went 18-23-3 overall this season, including 10-12-0 in ECAC Hockey play. They reached the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, falling to Harvard in three games.
