Alex Mednikova had two victories, including a win over the No. 45 individual in Division III, but they were not enough as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 loss to Christopher Newport University in a non-league match at the USTA National Campus. The Engineers drop to 5-6, while the Captains improve to 2-5.
After falling behind with a loss at No. 3 doubles, RPI took the lead heading into singles as Mednikova and
Rani Jones posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 and
Krisia Flores Gonzalez and
Lorna Flores Gonzalez won 8-7 (7-2).
Christopher Newport tied the match at 2-2, but Mednikova topped Tessa Trate 6-1, 6-3 to put RPI back in front. The Captains went on to win each of the final four matches for the 6-3 victory.
The Engineers conclude their trip with a pair of matches on Friday, beginning with Otterbein University at 8am. Christopher Newport returns to Newport News, Va., to face North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday.
