FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -
Rodrigo Muelas had a pair of birdies and 10 pars for a +4, 74 to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) golf team after day 1 of the two-day Farmingdale State Spring Invitational being held at Bethpage State Park's Red Course. He is tied for 14th overall and the Engineers are fourth of seven schools.
Muelas birdied the par-4 third (390 yards) and the par-4 ninth (468) to go out at +1, 36. He then rattled off five straight pars from holes 12-16 and finished with a 38 on the back nine. He is tied with five others, including teammate
Jacob Lindsay, all of whom are one shot from 10th place.
Lindsay bounced back from a triple on the 471-yard, par-4 first and a bogey on the par-4 second to register a birdie on No. 6 (350-yard, par-4) and 14 pars. He was even on eight holes on the back nine and came in at +1, 36.
Senior
Joey Harrigan is one of three at +5, 75 after a day in which he had nine straight pars from No. 6 to No. 14. He went out at +2, 37 and in at +3, 38.
Thomas Fraser shot a +6, 76 and
Trent Han was one stroke back.
When action continues on Sunday, Sean Hurley of Skidmore begins with the lead with a -1, 69, while the Thoroughbreds and New York University are in front for the team trophy with a +9, 289. Husson is in third at +13, 293 and the Engineers are in fourth at +19, 299.
