ORLANDO, Fla. - The seasons of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's and men's tennis teams came to an end in the first round of doubles at the NCAA Championships as both squads were defeated. The tandem of
Rani Jones and
Alex Mednikova lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to a tandem from Bethel, while Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Peter Lohrbach took a 6-2, 6-4 loss to a pair from Washington U.
In the women's match, the Engineers battled back from down 4-1 in the first set, rattling off four straight victories for a 6-4 win. Jones and Mednikova then held a 3-1 edge in the second but their opponents, Grace Riermann and Sydney Rott, won the final five games to even the match. Set No. 3 was back-and-forth and RPI led 4-3 before the duo from Bethel won the final three games.
The RPI men won the first game of the first set, but Daniel Li and Abhi Ramireddy of Wash. U. had a string of five consecutive victories. The second set was back-and-forth with Drover-Mattinen and Lohrbach winning two straight games to tie things at 4-4, but the match turned for the Bears, who won with a 6-4 triumph.
