CLINTON, N.Y. - Sophomore
Lorna Flores Gonzalez and freshman
Nikki Ridenour both went 3-0 and are among three singles players and two doubles teams to remain alive for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional being held at Hamilton College. Action continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday for those who advance.
Friday's first day of competition began with doubles and Flores Gonzalez and Ridenour defeated a duo from Vassar College in a tiebreak, 8-7 (4) to advance to the Round of 16. They face a duo from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) at 9am on Saturday.
Also competing at that time will be sophomore
Brooke Bauer and freshman
Masha Karach, who posted an 8-2 win over a team from RIT. The RPI twosome will face a pair from the host Continentals.
The top-seeded team of
Rani Jones and
Alex Mednikova were defeated 8-6 by a duo from TCNJ.
In singles, Flores Gonzalez, Ridenour and Jones all had a pair of wins and will play in the Round of 16. Flores Gonzalez won her first round match 6-4, 6-2 (Hamilton) and her second 6-4, 6-1 (TCNJ). Ridenour had wins of 6-1, 6-1 (TCNJ) and 6-2, 1-0 (Skidmore) and Jones won 6-3, 6-2 (Ithaca) and 6-4, 6-3 (NYU).
Mednikova lost in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 (NYU) while Nitya Subramanian (6-1, 6-2) and
Sabrina Grewal (6-2, 6-0) lost in straight sets to foes from NYU and Rochester, respectively.
