Field Hockey Falls Just Short at New Paltz

Engineers Score Late, Garchinsky Strong in Loss

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team fell just short on the road Tuesday evening, as they were defeated by the SUNY New Paltz Hawks by a final score of 2-1. Sophomore goaltender Tess Garchinsky made 24 saves – a season-high – in the loss.

Garchinsky kept the Hawks off the board in the opening frame, making nine saves in the first 15 minutes. However, New Paltz scored their first goal just two minutes into the second quarter, as Ayden Fleming scored on an assist from Rachel Tama to make it 1-0 Hawks. That scored remained into halftime.

Just over eight minutes into the third quarter, Amanda Quenneville struck for the second New Paltz goal on an assist from Morgan Woolley. With a 2-0 lead, New Paltz continued to put up the pressure, but was turned away by Garchinsky through the final horn.

RPI jumped back into the game right off the bat in the fourth quarter, as Lauren McCarthy scored an unassisted goal to cut the New Paltz lead back to just a single goal. However, the Engineers couldn't find a scoring chance the rest of the way.

Quenneville and Tama each had seven shots on goal for the Hawks, while McCarthy was joined by Emily Dubord, Julie Thomas, and Abby Peterson with shots on goal for the game.

The Engineers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. when they hit the road to take on William Smith.
