Field Hockey Downed at William Smith

Engineers Held Scoreless in Geneva

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team matched up in Liberty League action with William Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers couldn't find the back of the net in the contest, falling 4-0 to the Herrons. Hannah Huston and Rebecca Mantione each scored a pair of goals on the game for William Smith.

RPI struggled offensively, putting up two shots on the afternoon - both coming in the fourth quarter. Huston scored the games opening goal at the 4:05 mark, giving William Smith the 1-0 lead. That score remained through halftime, as the Engineers kept it close thanks to seven first half saves from sophomore Tess Garchinsky

The Herons then scored two late goals in the third quarter - with the first from Huston at the 37:33 mark before the last from Mantione coming with just 59 seconds to play in the frame. William Smith then held a 3-0 lead into the fourth quarter, which they added two 23 seconds in on Mantione's second of the day to move the Herons lead to four. Garchinky finished with 15 saves on the afternoon.

RPI returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. when they play host to Skidmore at Harkness Field in Liberty League action.
