ITHACA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming and diving team put up a solid first day at the Liberty League Championships on Wednesday, as the Engineers sit third overall of eight teams from the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium at Ithaca College.
Highlighting the events for RPI were two school records falling, led by the individual effort of Mike Dows in the 50 freestyle. Previously breaking the school records in the prelims earlier in the day, Dowd proceeded to re-brake that record with a time of 20.52, putting him in third place for the event.
Dowd was then a part of the other broken record, as he,
Tony Min, Nick Stefanidis, and
Lorenzo Gurri took home third in the Men's 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:31.80 – breaking the record they had also re-set earlier in the day.
Other highlights for the Engineers came from a 6
th and 7
th place finish from
Sam Ciegler and
Ethan Gadbois in the 500 freestyle, while Min added a seventh place effort in the 200 individual medley. Stefanidis also joined Dowd in the 50 freestyle, finishing eighth.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Thursday, February 16 at 10 a.m. with prelims before finals in the evening.
